Applying under African American...hurt or help chances?

My mother is black and my farther is white, so should i apply under white or black in my applications, i know the UC's dont calculate ur race into their equations...however for schools like Cornell and Duke, will applying under black help my chances?

youre white

Master, he's half black/half white. Yet you say he's white. Hmm I'm not seeing where the white half is all of a sudden "bigger" or something.

Don't listen to him, he's just a kid bitter about AA. Put down African-American, it will definitely help you, and it's the truth.

Not to mention that throughout history offspring have been considered the race of the mother.

It will help.

Put down other and idicate that you're both. This is rare and will work in your favor.

this is not that rare and he sould put down afrcan-american to get an advantage. In fact in 200 years they predict the races will be so muddled to together that nobody will be able to put down one definitive race over another.

Well, what culture do you most identify with?

This is crap...i'm sorry, but this should not be a topic of disscussion. one's race should not "help" or "hurt" their college chances. this is 2006, not 1966. if someone has the same grades and credentials as me, they should not be above or below me just because of their skin color. stop worrying about which little circle to shade in, and worry about bigger and better things like your essays or SATs or grades. colleges are starting to shy away from racial profiling, so just put "other", as its the truth anyways.

No, the truth is he's half black, half white. Most colleges allow you to check off more than one - pick both. And if you put "other", make sure you put that you're half African-American. It's true, why not use something that can help you and something many others are using?

I don't get why everyone's so bitter about this. If this guy doesn't use AA, another guy will. He's not taking YOUR place. Get over it.

people here are not bitter about this kid taking one place or anything.... true..there might be some people who are qualified...but others are blatantly not up to par...and it's reverse racism against whites and asians, especially asians, as we can see in berkeley, when AA's banned, its asian population almost doublefolded
