I just got accepted in the MA African studies at Stanford for this fall and awarded a fellowship to cover half of my tuition. My areas of concentration are political economy and security. I am interested in getting a job in Africa,Washington DC or New York but I have little or no work experience. Given that the program doesn't offer an internship, what are my chances of getting a job in the places mentioned above after my graduation?

very slim considering the economic situation. plus, majoring in African studies or any ethnic/gender studies kinda limits you to be a teacher/politician. Stanford is pretty impressive but without internship and connections, it will be very unlikely that you will have an easy time finding jobs especially in DC. if you are hoping to work for the gov, it will be even harder considering that they are having budget problems and are trying to cut people. If I were you, I would go major in something else or go to a different school. Stanford is very very nice but doing African Studies in there mean you will probably work in minimum wage job. I wish you luck in the future :)

Thnx for the advice. I’ll think about it and consider other options.
