My son received a Type 7 Air Force ROTC Scholarship. This particular scholarship will only pay in-state tuition. We live in NC so USC is out of state, which would normally be a no-go (you can't simply pay the difference out of pocket) However, my son has been admitted into the Honors College and received a letter in the mail basically saying he would get at least in-state tuition. In the same letter though, it uses the term tuition-reduction. Does anybody know if a Type 7 AFROTC scholarship will work at USC if the OOS student receives scholarship money from the school as well as tuition-reduction?

Talk to the college to find out. They may not allow stacking scholarships. They should be familiar with this.

If an OOS school offers an AFROTC Type 7 scholarship recipient in-state tuition, then the Type 7 recipient can use his AFROTC scholarship at that school. Make sure you get clarification in writing from USC that they are offering the in-state tuition rate, and what the specific requirements are to keep that tuition rate. Also, call the AFROTC Detachment for USC and discuss this scenario with them. They will know what you will need to do to utilize your Type 7 at USC.

Keep in mind that your son will NEED to be selected for SFT after his sophomore year otherwise the AFROTC scholarship goes away and probably also the in-state tuition offer. Recently only 55% of candidates were selected for SFT…so make sure you have a Plan B.

Congrats and good luck to your son!
