AFROTC and UVA

My son was awarded a substantial ROTC scholarship and VA is his 1st choice. Should he contact the University or the ROTC detachment and let them know? Any info appreciated.

I'm not sure if AFROTC works the same as NROTC, but I was awarded a NROTC scholarship my senior year of high school and I didn't get a choice, but instead, they assigned me a school that I had selected on the application. If he gets in to UVa, then I would contact the ROTC board and let them know it's his first choice, but I don't think a ROTC scholarship automatically gets you in at a school of your choice.
Did he get a scholarship to a certain school? Or will it apply anywhere?

The scholarship applies to any school.

Then yes, I think it would be benificial for your son to send a letter to UVa letting them know he recieved the scholarship. I know its a very selective process, so its a big deal. This way he can also include his strong desire to attend UVa, and should maybe highlight some of the aspects of the AFROTC branch at UVa. Good luck, and congrads to him =)

i also know, from going through the same process, that ROTC departments have at least a little swing in the admissions process. if they feel that he is a strong candidate, its likely they'll vouch for him. it never hurts to have a guy/girl on the inside...

I had the same question too.

also, if there is someone willing to pay full tuition (ie: the air force) it alleviates the pressure, because the school knows they're getting their money. On top of that, they know that there is going to be burden placed on the student to keep his grades up to keep the scholarship...meaning he's a good bet if he's a borderline case. if he is out of the running pool for UVA admissions criteria, chances are it won't do much good. if he meets UVA's qualifications, its icing on the cake.
