After Harvard, which school...

Here is my question:

After Harvard University, which U.S. university/college is the most famous worldwide?

Oxford/Cambridge
Then MIT

(I decided to go with worldwide, I know your question is US)

but that is not located in the united states

according to newsweek,

*** is oxford

jk, its an English place for blue bloods

Look at THES or Newsweek though

Caltech is more well-known worldwide than MIT? I doubt it. Carnegie Mellon is actually in the top 3 for international job recruiting, though.

well does that list apply since im not so sure UC san francisco is more well-known than columbia...

Newsweek is wrong, I'm sure more ppl know princeton worldwide than "Michigan Ann-Arbor"

Are you kidding? I just don't see Cal-tech or Yale above Berkeley at all....

http://www.topuniversities.com/worlduniversityrankings/results/2006/top_200_universities/

^^This one is pretty accurate. (at least for the top 10)

Ah, Sheed, in the eastern part of Bhutan, it is true that Berkeley has wonderful name recognition, but in the northern Maldives, Yale is far better known, while Caltech is quite famous in Sao Tome.
RootBeerCaesar, you should be aware that Michigan is extremely well known in Micronesia, far better than Princeton, though Princeton is, of course, thought very well of in Swaziland.

Does it matter what people in eastern europe think of your "prestigious" ivy-league degree? As long as those tools on Wall-street care, isn't that enough? =)

In China it goes something like this:

Harvard
Princeton (movies- i.e Beautiful Mind)
MIT (many techie asians)
Berkeley (50% asians)
Columbia (Nobel prizes)
Stanford (west coast 'ivy')

Yale doesn't have GREAT international (asian) prestige for some reason. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that it has a bit of a lean towards the humanities.

Stanford, Berkeley.

Peking University is ranked the 14th best university in the world. Um, Peking University isn't even the best university in Asia, yet it gets the top Asian billing.

THES ranking is a joke, almost as ridiculous as Gourman

Worldwide UC Berkeley or possibly Yale or Stanford.

Ummm what about those 100 Yale kids who went on a Potempkin tour of the PRC this summer?

And what university did Hu Jintao visit in the United States?

Well I can see that the masses would not know Yale here, but the elites sure as balls do

Yale has excellent international prestige. While areas of the world focused heavily on tech and engineering, i could understand how MIT and Stanford might be more well known to the general public. But in general, Yale is extremely well known. I personally would say third after Harvard and UC Berkeley in the whole world. Although a solid argument would be made for Stanford to be in the top three as well.

lol, the only reason I care about international rankings is so I could impress chicks when I went abroad to London last year

By the way, datalook, NO ranking is as ridiculous as Gourman; THES might be off a little bit, but the factors Gourman looks at period are just a joke, whereas THES admits it takes into account the entire university and not just undergrad.
