After Plebe Summer

What happens after Plebe Summer is over but before the academic year begins? There's a couple weeks, right?

first off its only a week till the brigade reforms as far as I know. what i have heard is that we will just do more training kinda like plebe summer cause its already a little shorter than normal

yes, it's called reform. it's when the rest of the brigade returns to school. their first job is called HELL-o night. they officially "welcome" the plebes by making sure that the cadre did their job in training the class over the summer. the plebes are rated by everyone, not just the summer cadre.

...everyone minus (in most companies) youngsters and some firsties. Hello night is really the 2/C's first chance to establish their authority since they are not allowed to talk to the plebes until then.

After moving into the ac year company area, reform week is spent wrapping up plebe summer training, going to lectures, getting books, getting your computer set up, etc etc. While the plebes are busy still getting towed everywhere by the 1/C detailers, the rest of the Brigade is coming back from summer training and checking out the plebes for the first time...except we can't talk to them, just look. Judgments, like it or not, will be formed during this time so it's in the plebes' best interest to keep sharp, greeting, blah blah because people will notice.

Don't they have a lot of special events? Like the tea and scones at the Supe's home, backpacking at Camp David, and the trip to see all the DC monuments? I remember my son saying it was a really neat, great time to finally enjoy being part of it. Kick back, watch the flix being aired there at T Court, take a ride in an F-18, and those really cool huge 'copters they fly in to the marching area by Alumni. I'd heard they bus in girls from Goucher and Sweet Briar for the dance on Friday nite. Sort of like frosh orientation at Princeton?

;) :)

You have Hello night, which is brutal depending on your company. The youngsters got 10 minutes or so to talk to us and then the 2/c came up and rated us and made us go tell people things. OUr's wasn't bad at all. Then we introduced ourselves and had to say something about it. Then we went to sleep. After PPW we had so many briefs!! Seriously, we went to like 10 that week. There was a lot of nothing going on though. We sat in our rooms a lot wondering what we were supposed to be doing. It was a weird feeling.

the plebes are rated by everyone

then the 2/c came up and rated us

What exactly does "rated" mean?

Rated means asked questions regarding the knowledge (or rates) that you're supposed to know...menus, stuff in Reef Points, that kind of thing.

Hello night completely depends on your company. My Training Officer didn't believe in HELL-o night, so he made it an actual hello night--we were on a bulkhead and upperclass came around and shook our hands.

Gotta love a Company that doesn't break their stones at Reform.

I didn't even think of that gap week.... Good to know!

It used to be when an upperclass shook a Plebe's hand, it meant he had been "spooned". This bascially meant that the Plebe could disregard upperclass distinction with the individual who shook his hand.

Thats how it still is usually... Atleast thats what I did. A shake of the hand and a "hey I'm Rob" like your just meeting for the first time. I do find it very interesting that the training officer decided to have the upperclass go around and shake the hands of the plebes at reform.
