After UPenn undergrad

Hey CC,
I was wondering if most students who graduated from UPenn as undergrads end up living in the Philly Area. I am from CA and hope to move back there after college. However, I was told that many of the recruiters that come to UPenn will be from the Philly Area so I will end up living there if I want a job. Is this true?
Thanks!

Umm, no. From what I’ve seen a huge chunk of Penn grads (and for that matter, all Ivy League grads) make a mass exodus to New York City.

There are Penn grads all over the country and the world. I myself got recruited from Penn by a company in India (no I’m not Indian)

This is easy enough to determine. Just skim through the career surveys of all four undergraduate schools for the last several years (each has breakdowns by employers and geographic areas):

[College of Arts and Sciences Career Surveys](http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/college/careersurveys.html)

[Wharton School Undergraduate Career Surveys](http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/wharton/surveys.html)

[School of Engineering and Applied Science Career Surveys](http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/seas/surveys.html)

[School of Nursing Career Surveys](http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/nursing/)

The bottom line is that MOST certainly DO NOT end up living in the Philly area.

NYC is infested by Penn students :)

Thanks for the responses. I looked over the links and noticed that only around 10% go to California. Will it be tougher for me to find a job if I wanted to go that route?

^ Given that around 240-250 graduating seniors do it every year, it can’t be TOO tough. Certainly, the career interest at Penn is much more focussed on the East Coast than the West Coast–after all, only about 8% of the Class of 2013 came from California. But you’ll find that at all of the top East Coast schools.

Still, finding West Coast jobs is certainly possible for graduates of top East Coast schools, and many of them do it. Penn has quite a significant alumni presence in California:

Sanfrancisco divisions of all the major investment banks recruit well at penn and I know several people going west for work.
