After you've applied: Communications from schools

oh yes, klc, she certainly has! And she got a stuffed mascot with college T-shirt for X-mas! She can't wait!

QG - I just checked the master list & saw the Yale acceptance for your daughter! My son is a frosh there now so if you have any questions ask away!

My S is one of those UChicago callers. He volunteered to call because he thinks it is important for a prospective student to hear from an attending student. He really likes the university and wants to communicate his enthusiasm for the place as well. He has said his calls have been very well received and the questions have been good. Personally, I also like the idea of having students call.

idad, i completely agree! UChicago is such a great school... i soooo wanted my kids to apply there... oh well, there's always grad school.

Actually, D got a personal letter from her regional admissions officer today welcoming her to Yale. Very nice, mentioning specific parts of her app, inviting her to visit, and giving her her phone number and e-mail address.

YALE is just a completely amazing place! The music, the conversations, the eagerness & the comradeship - it is all good!
Only one thing wrong - it's on the wrong coast! LOL!

Whitman -- after I sent my SAT scores, i got a letter saying they received it. then, after each part of the application was submitted, i kept getting a letter with my application status. then, i got an email with log in information allowing me to check my status. after the application was complete, the regional admission officer sent a letter saying my application was complete. Oh yes - before my app was complete, my teacher's app was missing so he called my cell phone (!!) and asked what was up. wasn't expecting that call. very friendly.

lehigh - i got a few post cards, then a specific viewbook from their arts and sciences school. a letter with information about my status. i also communicated with the admission officer through email. after he read my app, he emailed me letting me know that everything was ok. very friendly.

uw sent me log in information for app status.. then after 2 months sent me an acceptance. i am supposed to get another packet in the mail soon.

What struck me was that S was very organized: he has an Excel file of each item required for each of his 12 apllication, and when it was sent. It was my job to double check the envelopes and make certain he had sent everything, put stampos on the envelopes and drop them at the post office. So we are certain everything was sent.

Despite this, only three of the colleges managed to keep everything that was sent. Several managed to lose at least three copies of the same document (the transcript seems to be coated in oil or something...it just slips through their fingers again and again). And after application one school sent S to the site where he could check his application online, only to have it not work. After several months of fruitless back and forth by email, he called and finally found out what happened: they lost his entire application! And it was too late to re-apply. Scratch one school from the list...

If he had only applied to 2 or 3, that might have been a catastrophic moment.

As it is, 9 of 12 twelve lost some or all of the application materials that we sent. Strangely, no school lost a teacher rec, which seems to be the item that I see as having been lost or late so often on CC.

We received an email about a week after S's application was sent in to his large State univ. saying his SAT score was missing. I was pretty annoyed because when he took SAT as a Jr. he had the score sent directly to them. So I knew they must have the score somewhere. I was fuming as I dialed the Admissions number (thinking I would have to send College Board yet more $$!). Surprise..the person in admissions was so friendly and helpful. She assured me that they would look again and call me back as soon as possible. I was still somewhat doubtful. It is after all a Univ. with over 25,000 students. Imagine my surprise when I came home from work that afternoon to a message on my machine apologizing for the mix-up and yes the SAT score had been found and his package reviewed immediately and they were happy to say my S had been accepted for admission(just one week after app. was sent in). A few weeks later we got the "big envelope" with official acceptance and a window decal. After that no special calls or emails...just the usual stuff about housing and meal plans but S. didn't really care. We never went and did an officail tour because we were pretty familiar with the campus (dh's alma mater) S. is now a happy freshman at NCSU.

S. also applied to a neighboring state's flagship school(Univ. of S.C.). Since we were not as familiar with it as our own State school, we called and signed up to take an official tour (which was very well done).
After that we immediately began receiving mail and phone calls. After he was admitted the correspondence kept coming....lots of post cards with various pics. of the campus and students engaged in diff. activities., information about the honors college, etc. Received way more mail by far from this school. I wonder if it had anything to do with going and taking the official tour at one school but not the other?
