For all of you, current college students, do you feel the age difference between classes?

I will be 20 my freshman year and I'm afraid it'll be a little awkward to only be around 18 yr olds. How bad do you honestly think it will be?

Also, in colleges where there's a grad school, how is the intercation between them and the undergrads? Do they live around and are dominant on campus?

I'm an 18 y/o freshman, but most of my friends are sophomores and juniors, and I have seniors in some of my classes too. I'm sure that if I can have friends who are 20/21 you shouldn't have a problem.

I don't feel any age differences - there are freshmen who look really old for their age, and upperclassmen who still look pretty young. We don't really talk about our ages either...so I don't think it'll be too awkward to be 20 around 18 yr olds. Northwestern has a grad school and there are grad students around - but they don't look any different than undergrads.

I have a friend who just turned 21 as a sophomore and I don't think he has any problems fitting in...and I'm friends with some seniors and I'm not that conscious of the age difference. I guess subconsciously I know they're older but it's not really a problem.

The different classes don't feel as divided off to me as they did in HS (I guess it's obvious to tell freshmen most of the time, because they tend to be immature and don't quite know the "laws of the land" yet). A bunch of people so far have told me that they thought I was an upperclassman because I didn't act like a freshman...I took it as a compliment. :)

I'm eighteen and a freshman. My calculus class is held from 6 to 7:30 at night, so it is full of part-time students in their forties and fifties--I would be glad to have a twenty-year-old.

Thank you so much!
It's very nice to hear... it just frasturates me so much sometimes since I've always been the youngest among my classmates. I graduated from high school 17 y/o, and now it's already my second year after garduation. Kinda had to take two years off. I had to do army service first, for 2 years. So I kinda started everything in a young age and suddenly being the older can be a bit weird!

I'm looking at USC as my first (and kinda only) choise. It has a big grad students population, and is very large so I suppose I will find some more exceptions like myself. Well, hopefully.

I heard that some schools isolate freshmen in their first year (Duke does that I think). They live in an entire different side of campus, have their own dorms, dinning halls, everything. I hope ut's not like that for most schools.

Once you get onto the campus.....nobody will care how old or not old you are. Your big issue will be that some kids can go to 21 age required places and other friends cannot go.....that seems like a small issue to me. As for class, lots of folks will want to know about your service experience. You will feel more experienced in some instances but as to the age.......no biggy.

One of the people that I'm living with is 23 (went to Community College) and he's the ****ing man. It's nice to have someone older around.

I'm 18 and a freshman, but I'm living with all sophomores and juniors, the 23 year old, and a 26 year old grad student. It's really not that bad, no one cares how old everyone else is, we still hang out together.

I'm 20 and most of the people here are 18, there is even a 15-year old in our class (!). That doesn't seem to matter at all though. I was just as concerned as you were about it, but it's in no way a problem. Plus, sophomore year you're gonna be 21, and you will be such a valuable asset for your underage friends ;)

I know a guy who is a 25 year old freshman......dont trip off of the age thing because it really doesn't matter. you're gonna be treated like a kid no matter what age you are anyway.....lol.

No, seriously....don't worry about it. I can understand feeling awkward, but it will pass. I feel odd around younger people too, but my classes are a mix of ages. I can have people 17 to 60ish in my classes.
