age requirements for loan

I was researching alternative loans, rather than parent plus loans, to close the gap with tuition..... I found that you have to be 18, even with a co-signer, to apply. Just lovely for those turning 18 after they start school. Is this common, or did I just happen upon the banks that have this requirement. The banks said it would be necessary to apply for a parent loan first semester, then apply for an alternative (student) loan for second, when I will be 18. Anyone else find this too? or see any way around it?
