Ok so I go to a decent Midwestern flagship state school and I am double majoring in finance and accounting. I’m just a freshman so things could change. I am interesting in Investment Banking (I go to a non-target, but we have a huge passionate alumni base, so hopefully that could help) and working in NYC. I’m also interested in consulting and since I go to a non-target I have to keep the Big 4 in mind. But BB IB Wall Street is the goal for now.

But anyways I’m still not sure what I want to do with life or after working for a few years and getting my MBA (a M7 school is the ultimate goal). But I would eventually like to work/live in Chicago and I’ve heard that futures and commodities are big there. I come from a farming background (dad grew up on farm, uncle used to farm the land. Now they cash rent it out and my parents still have a pretty big stake), and I’ve always been interested in agribusiness.

Would minoring in agribusiness be helpful for landing a good job in Chicago later in my life (this is a minor, mind you, so really not that much of a help)? I’m thinking post-MBA when I’m in my late 20s or close to 30. I know majoring in it would really help, but I’m really not THAT interested in it and really only interested in the finance/management side of it.

I haven’t talked to my advisor yet, but from online it looks like it wouldn’t take too much more work to add an agribusiness minor (a lot of overlaps with my accounting major) and I’m interested in a couple of the classes like one about Commodities and Futures.

Worth the extra effort? Could only be an extra 2 or 3 classes and I’m coming in with a lot of AP credit so double majoring is not going to be that hard/take extra time, but I don’t know for sure.

Just wanted to throw this out here. I tried doing a search and nothing really came up. My cousin is an ag business major at another Midwestern school but he wants to work in a kind of a rural area, more direct. But there have to options for agribusiness in Chicago right? Most of the big firms have to have big offices there, right?

Thanks, just throwing stuff out there. Any feedback is appreciated.

Edit: Ag business minor is outside of the regular business school, if tht means anything.
