I'm considering transferring to UVA as an OOS student. I understand that UVA meets 100% financial need. However, only 66% of one's need is met in grants (on average according to collegeboard.com). What worries me are the tuition increases for OOS from year to year. Four to five years ago, the OOS tuition was around 20k a year, and now it's above 30k. After grants and loans, I most definitely could not afford making up for 5k to 10k in tuition increases. I can't expect UVA to give me much $ in grants as an OOS student and I don't want to suffocate myself with up to 10k in loans every year. Should I bother applying? Or does anyone know if UVA will be conservative with tuition increases in the coming years?

I’m fearful about that also since I am an OOS applicant too. I hope they don’t continue to increase tuition.

Firstly, you need an EFC figure…

With an EFC of 5000, I had 27k in grants.

With an EFC of 1000, I had 28k in grants (but 3.8k Pell and 7k subsidised loans).

If you don’t take out a dining plan and cook for yourself, you save 3.7k.

Work study opportunities also are available. Some are pretty chill. I work 8 hours a week at the UVA Hospital (graveyard shift), but I spend most of it doing my lab reports…(yes at UVA 8 hours per lab report is good)

I’d do 20 hours of that a week, but I actually don’t have that much work study funds.

With an outside scholarship of 2k/yr, I only had to take out 383 dollars in loans last semester, which was easily covered by work study (as well as other jobs).
