Congratulations to those who made AIME. How are you all preparing?
Yeah Im taking it
I hope its easier than last year…
Is AIME II going to be easier?
Also a friend richardwang470 at gmail dot com is holding an AIME discussion thread for east coast students. Email him if you want to see the answers(general consensus) after the test
@jzhubgbs hard to tell. Some years, AIME II is easier, and in others (particularly 2011, where I got wrecked by AIME I), AIME I is harder. The USAMO cutoffs were 188 and 215.5 respectively that year.
I’ve heard rumors (but I don’t know if it’s true) that they literally decide AIME I and AIME II via a single coin toss. It may not be true, but it seems fair enough to me.
I read that it actually is a coin toss.
BTW
Did you guys hear about the AMC 12 A/B qualifying score mishap? MAA changed the qualifying score from the original 92 to 96 for 12A and to a unprecedented 106.5 in 12B.
@chx177 I’ve heard about the 106.5 cutoff. There is actually a petition on change.org to change the cutoff to 100.
I’ve heard about 96 but didn’t know that it was 92 previously. That must suck if one scored 93 or 94.5.
There are already multiple discussions about it on AoPS:

In particular, AIME qualification through the AMC 12 in the previous few years has been the set of those who scored >=100, or who scored in the top 5%, whichever is greater. The 2016 Teacher’s Manual ([here](http://www.maa.org/sites/default/files/pdf/AMC/aime/TM-AIME.pdf)) states:
Given this, it is clear that a score at least 100 is sufficient to qualify for AIME.
However, I’ve heard from multiple AoPS posts that the AMC 12 booklet was ambiguous about whether 100 or top 5% qualifies for AIME.
And the AIME I is supposed to be…tomorrow?
@ElectricalFlux1 I would refrain from discussing AIME until after the contest period. What sort of “verification” is it?
Cutoff is 92 they cannot withdraw hundreds of kids when test is tomorrow
I just finished taking the AIME. PM me if you want to discuss, but be warned, I’ll ask you a question to make sure you’ve taken it, like “What was the general math topic of number 4” or “What’s the third word in number 7”.
Update: MAA announced that students that scored 100 or greater can take the AIME II officially.
Apparently the general consensus is that the AIME II was way harder than the AIME I (I haven’t looked at the AIME II problems myself.) They’ll probably split cutoffs.
Whatever looks like people on cc don’t care about this stuff…
