Air Conditioning? Room size? Residential college questions

Do we have any kind of air conditioning at any(if not all) residential college?
If not, what's recommended option....a fan, or maybe compact a/c that I can put it in room? I bet I can't really 'install' them haha.
Also, how big is the room? Are all rooms that freshman goes pretty much double?
If so, is it just one small(or medium) room with furnitures aligned side to side?

Thanks.

Yeah, I was wondering about the air conditioning too - do the dorms have it?

I was at rice two weeks ago for a tour, and I believe that all the colleges have it except for Will Rice college--but I think WR is getting it for this coming year....

The rooms vary quite a bit. They can even vary within each college. D's freshman room had a suite arrangement with 2 bedrooms (2 beds in each) opening onto a living room. So there were 4 girls sharing the 2 bedrooms and living room. A bathroom connected their suite to another suite, which meant 8 girls shared the bathroom, which had 2 showers, sinks, toilets etc. This year her room was in another section of her college and had 1 sleeping room for 4 girls and a living room. The bathroom was down the hall and was smaller than the bathroom the first year. It was pretty cramped. Later in the summer when you get your room assignment you can find out the floorplan.

All rooms and all buildings at Rice have air conditioning. Whether you have control over the thermostat or not is a different story. ;)

For the curious, here's the 8-minute guide to Rice undergraduate housing.

Also note that, while each college is different, Rice strives to make the number of square feet of living space per student per room as equal as possible across the campus. You'll find larger discrepancies between newer rooms and older rooms (e.g. Martel vs. Will Rice); that's usually due to new housing codes/requirements/standards.

My #1 tip: bring only what you NEED to study and be reasonably comfortable; you can bring/buy more stuff once you get an idea of how much space you really have. And think ahead to when you have to move out; what goes in must come out. :-)

aibarr said it correctly-- all dorms are air conditioned (all buildings are a/c'd) but your control over the temp is limited. My s's room had a knob on the a/c, but we think it was for (1) quite cold and (2) frigid. His blanket came in handy.
