Air Conditioning Unit in the window of dorm room?

My son is going to Duke in August and we found out that he is in the oldest dorm in the East Campus Freshman area. (Alspaugh) Since there is no AC in the dorm, are we allowed to put a window unit in the window ourselves?

Nope. Unless he has a doctor’s note that it’s required for his health (e.g. allergies). I recommend a lot of fans. It’s only bad for a month or two and is a rite of passage. Epworth is the oldest dorm on East incidentally, not Alspaugh.

As bluedog said, it’s not bad. Once the room gets cooled down (they’re stuffy when you first move in), the continuous running of the fans keeps the room tolerable. The fans are useful for blocking out noise as well.

The upside to Alspaugh is that the rooms are pretty big and come with a massive walk in closet. Rooms in the air conditioned dorms are (or at least used to be) noticeably smaller.
