I'm in the process of applying to the Air Force Academy and pondering majoring in some engineering field, possibly MechE. How do companies look at grads from the AFA, especially since they have 5 years of job experience in the Air Force once they graduate?

Most of the graduates of the AFA and other academies become career military. You will rarely see academy graduates join the workforce immediately after their initial committment is up. The academy is very difficult to get into, and they make sure that the people they let in are going to be in the service for a long time.

And where are you getting this idea that you will have 5 years experience? No one will consider the time spent while in the academy as "job experience."

I believe Oscar was refering to the 5 year minimum service committment.

is service really considered "job experience"?

"I believe Oscar was refering to the 5 year minimum service committment."

Perhaps, but he should have been more careful with his wording. They won't have 5 years of job experience "once" they graduate, they will have it after they serve their 5 years. Also, I believe the requirement is 8 years, with 5 years active.

The AFA is a strong engineering school and their graduates have excellent prospects after their service is done. I've known a couple of AFA graduates who went on to graduate school and did well. If you are comfortable with the commitment then it is an excellent choice.

Damn I just got owned by sky.

I apologize.

I meant after the five year commitment was over.
