"What I would consider doing is taking the super shuttle to and from the marriott medical center, then either walking or taking the rail to campus. It's much cheaper than a cab, but more reliable than the bus."

Can we get some detail on this as I do not understand why not just take the super shuttle all the way to Rice? Does it not go to Rice campus for some reason or does getting off at the medical center Marriott save some extra money?

How about pricing info from both Hobby and Bud if somone knows it?

^ I checked and the SuperShuttle is $23 from Hobby and $27 from the other airport.

Good question above on why someone said to take the Shuttle to the marriott medical center instead of just going directly to Rice. What would be the point of doing that?

For those flying into the big airport the Metro seems to have a bus that leaves ever 30 minutes and goes directly to a downtown transfer station for $15. Looks like another option.

Also, it looks like the cabs have a fixed rate for departures from the airports. From the way I read it, the fare is the same for 1 to 4 people so if you can find someone to share a ride it could be a reasonable option also. I've never been to Houston so I have no first hand knowledge but Yellow cab estimated $28 to Rice from Hobby.

Just to follow up on the metro bus from IAH. I took this to the airport last time I went home and it was really easy, you just take the lightrail to the transit center and there are a lot of signs that show you where to get on the bus. I didnt take it back to campus because it stops running at around 8:30 and I landed later than that, but I saw the signs in the airport so that would probably be not too hard. I would recommend it only if you aren't going to have a big bag because you do have to ride on the lightrail. But it was a great cheap option (free when you are a Rice student!) to get to IAH. And it only takes 30 minutes which is faster than you'll get with SuperShuttle. But overall I would probably still recommend coming through Hobby. I just found an insanely cheap flight through IAH last time.

You probably already know, but yes you can take liquids and gels in your carry on - just in small amounts.
3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3.4 ounce bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin.

I'm guessing you're too young for a car rental? A few will rent to a 21 year old. Cab is way easier than navigating through unfamiliar city in a time crunch - you'd me much more relaxed upon arrival with cab or shuttle.
