Alcohol Policy Changes at Grinnell

Just reading the campus memo on changes to alcohol policy on campus. As the parent of an incoming freshman I was not that familiar with the current policy, though it seemed alcohol use was prevalent. From what I’m seeing Norris will become all substance free and there will be changes to how alcohol is served on campus. Also a reference to the annual 10/10 party and how alcohol is served during that event. Thoughts?

Count me in as equally interested in any discussion of this from the perspective of those familiar with current policies. It was a pretty wordy and reference-heavy memo. My takeaway was “it not be quite as loose as it’s been.”

I agree. The language was a bit confusing. The main takeaway I had was that they will permit alcohol consumption in student rooms and houses, by those who are of legal drinking age. It sounds like they are trying to restrict students from walking around the halls with alcohol or drinking and having parties in the dorm lounges, and athletic facilities, that involve alcohol. I suppose having Jrs and Srs in dorms and houses, right alongside the younger students, has resulted in a more relaxed attitude, in the past. We’ve had discussions with our son about alcohol use at college, as he did not drink in high school. He just spent some time backpacking in Europe and had some exposure with having wine or beer with their dinner, as 18 year olds are legal over there. I know he went to some student only meetings, while we were on campus for the Accepted Students visit. Maybe they discussed the alcohol policy there. I’ll ask him. We’ll go thru the letter w/ him as well.

As I wrote on the Why Grinnell thread, I only learned about this change in policy thru the parent’s list serve email I rec’d. We did not receive an email directly from the college.
