So, we got our class rankings today. As of right now, I'm 1 out of 488 students. however, due to getting a B over a summer class, its quite possible that I will drop down to 4th place when it comes to 1st semester re-ranking. Is it possible NOT to submit first semester ranking? I really don't like the fact that UVA will see that I went from first to fourth, without knowing the whole story (there was an issue in the class, somehow I ended up with a B).

If they must absolutely see my 1st semester rank, how bad of an effect will it have on my application? Will it make any difference if I turn in my application early?

Aside from UVA, can I apply to EA/ED schools to avoid the first semester rankings?

1st to 4th, not an insanley bad thing… Also I think if you apply to schools now and your full file is in you don’t need to put in firsrt semester rankings. Take that with a grain of salt because to be honest I’m not sure. Also you should be proud with a top 10 ranking. That is hard at any school… Especially one with 488 students.

I plan to turn in EVERYTHING by Nov 1st. Would this have any affect on what they see? I really want them to see me as Valedictorian of my class, instead of seeing me in 4th place. According to collegeboard, UVA places the most emphasis on Ethnicity (which should be fine, I’m a minority middle-easterner), GPA+Classrank (Valedictorian, 3.97 UW), i’m taking the hardest classes in the school. I just hope UVA would still view me as valedictorian.

Honestly, they really will not look down on you for being fourth instead of first. Fourth is still an amazing position, especially in a class of your size. Instead of worrying about that, just concentrate on making sure your essays and recommendations are stellar. If your test scores and extracurriculars are in line with your GPA/rank, I have no doubt that you will be accepted :)

I would be highly skeptical of trusting the CollegeBoard or Princeton Review, or any other site that tries to assign an ordinal weight/value to portions of your application, particularly with factors such as race/ethnicity, which can be highly sensitive.

That being said, and in agreement with Euroazn, your rank, will, regardless of whether you send in your application this month or November, still be in the upper echelon of your high school. I also think many admissions offers have a keen understanding that rank does not indicate a set distance, in terms of GPA, between 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on. It is often the case that there is very little separating a number of top students at a school, so it seems unlikely that it would hurt you very much.

I would love to see a link so I can write a few emails about that. It is incorrect. Please read the Office of Admission website. The factors that are most important are very clear.

It doesn’t read that it is most important, it falls under “very important”…I wonder if its place within the list of very important factors is what led the OP to assume that rank and ethnicity were most important?

There is a note towards the bottom though where it clarifies that academic record, scores, rank are the most important.

@wahoogrl08: Thats exactly what I took it as. I looked at collegeboard, and worked down the list of important factors, starting with Very Important as the most important, and considered as the least important.

@DeanJ, thank you for clearing that up! Would I be correct in assuming that GPA/Rank, Course Rigor, and SAT would be the most important factors above all else?
