alexandre...or anyone...please answer!

Hi! I applied august 19th to the university of michigan and i haven't heard anything yet. i haven't gotten back a response yet! i received a confirmation email on august 23rd. i have called and they said they received everything by august 23rd. i called again to make sure that the first person didn't make a mistake! should i be reading anything into this? why is it taking so long?

Did you indicate on your application that you were going to take the ACT/SAT again? If so, they could be waiting for your scores.

I have hear of several cases where Michigan would take 3-4 months to get back to an applicant and in some cases it was good news and in other cases bad news. So you cannot read into why it is taking so long. It could be that you are borderline and they are waiting to see your grades for the first half odf the year. If you don't mind, can you share with me your SAT/ACT, unweighed GPA, class rank and whether or not you are in-state or out-of-state?

nope, i didn't indicate that i was retaking anything....

alexandre, i don't mind at all, thanks for replying!

GPA unweighted, the way they do it : 3.5
weighted gpa the way princeton review online says : 3.7
I go to an insanely competitive private school in michigan. when michigan was using the point system, it got the highest points of all the schools in michigan for difficulty level. im saying this just so that you get an idea that a 3.5 doesn't mean the same thing at my school as it does at a diff school.
class rank : not sure, if im being pessimistic top 25%

SAT : 1340 verbal 690 math 650

applied: august 19th
confirmation email received: august 23rd
had all materials in by august 23rd

my college counselor told me "statiscially, you should get in." i was like is that a yes or a no. she repeated herself lol.

im sure that my teacher recs were good because the teachers i asked i know really well and they were really enthusiastic when i asked them.
my counselor knows how badly i want to attend the university of michigan and she knows me well so i don't believe that her rec would be a negative component.

alexandre- thanks again. If you don't mind me asking, how is it that you know so much about hte university of michigan when you live in Dubai?

These admissions decisions do seem a little random. A friend of my son with lower GPA and SAT's 200 points below his got in 3 weeks ago - he still hasn't heard.

Snez, your GPA is good concidering you go to a tough and well known Michigan HS and your SAT is slightly above the mean at Michigan concidering you are an in-state student. You also applied very early. So I would not panic. Maybe your area sends many applicants and as such, they take a long time to process applications. But it would make no sense for them to just put you on hold. If they had already gone over your application, they would have send you a decision by now. So do not worry. Their silence most likely means that they have simply not gone over your application. Call them again if you haven't heard from them in in a week or so.

And I know about the University of Michigan because that's where I did my undergraduate studies. I love the University of Michigan and try to learn as much about it as I can.

When my youngest son was applying to Umich, it was taking a lot longer than when the older one did. So I called his high school counselor to ask what we should do. She told us to email the admissions director for his school and ask for the status. He received a very quick reply that his application was fine and he received his reply within a week. I don't know what that means. Maybe they were just behind and this made them move faster. Maybe it was already on the way. All I know is it worked.

But there is no way it should be taking this long. Many people have already been notified and none of them could have applied much before you. Maybe your reply is misplaced or lost in the mail. They should certainly be sympathetic to you.

thanks everyone! I guess I will keep my fingers crossed. If i don't get anything by the 15th of december i will send the admissions director an email. Thanks again to all who replied- especially alexandre and boysmom!

snez14,
When was the last time you called admissions to check on your status? If you haven't called them since Aug 23, it is appropriate that you give them a call now to ask for your status. Your college counselor should know the name of the admissions counselor responsible for your area. They have your status online so they can tell you whether it is still being processed. Sometimes it gets misfiled or lost in the mail. It is indeed very late in your case.

goblue, i called them several times to confirm whether everything was okay. the last time i called was on december 3rd. they told me "it was still in processing."

U-M is in the second year of a completely new application and evaluation process. They are still learning, and they are proceeding cautiously. This is even more true this year because last year's class was larger than they wanted.

It doesn't mean U-M doesn't care, and it doesn't mean there is something wrong. I know it is frustrating to not hear any news.

hey all- thanks for replying. i just got a letter from them today- and the news made me cry - i got deferred. thanks for answering again
