Alexandre-question!

Hi Alexandre....I was just wondering, how is the journalism program at UMich? Originally, I planned on going to UMich if i dont get into Northwestern or UVA, but today I found out I got into the College of Communication at Boston University and they're offering to pay half my tuition. I'm currently debating between a career in clinical psychology or in communications/advertising/journalism. Since the comm school at BU is top 3 in the nation, it would clearly be better if i chose the latter career. still, i think i'd enjoy the UMich environment more ...can you tell me what you know about their journalism major and any other major that might accomodate a career in the comm/advertising field in case i choose that? also, how is their psychology major...strong? thanks!

I don't believe UMich has a journalism major. They do, however, have a communications major.

Can't help you with how good UMich is in those fields, but...

Question: Does the U-M offer a concentration in journalism?
Answer: Although the U-M does not offer a concentration in journalism, students who are interested in this field may wish to contact the Communication Studies department for information on similar courses of study in such topics as media communications, journalistic performance, and communication processes and technologies.
Swooshstar, Michigan does not have a Journalism concentration or department. But it does have a respected Communication Studies program. Back in the day, when I was a student at Michigan, our Communication department was ranked in the top 5 nationally. However, I know that the university did not provide much support to the program, so it may have declined over the years. I am not sure. If your interest is Journalism and you get into Northwestern, I would go there. Otherwise, go for Michigan.

A student with an interest in journalism could get a lot out of Michigan. I think you'd come out with a strong education. But, from what little I know, I think you'd have to be a little enterprising and willing to make some opportunities for yourself (instead of following a pre-set program, like you might find at a j-school).

They have revamped Comm Studies a lot, and I think they removed a lot of the "how to" classes because it is not a journalism or broadcasting program and was never meant to be. However, I believe there are a number of courses that are relevant and important to a journalism major.

For the how-to, hands-on, technique kinds of issues, I would think the Michigan Daily (student paper) would be the way to get that. You'd have a strong portfolio to show for it, upon graduation.

An undergraduate student may also have access to some interesting things at the grad level. There is a fellowship program that brings mid-career journalists from all over the country to campus to study for a year. It allows them to study, in depth, some subject that will enhance their ability to report accurately. That means in any given year there are some pretty interesting people in the journalism field on campus.
