Alexandre...

Hi. I applied to UMich around October 7th or so, and I took the October 9th SAT's so I don't know when they will be receiving them or if they have received the scores. My current stats are as follows:

I attend a pretty prestigious private school in New Jersey, but I live in NY State.

Cum. HS GPA, UW: 3.68 (I don't want to make excuses, but even the kids in my school with amazing grades have GPAs that seem sort of low. I don't know why, it's sort of odd). Oh, and freshman year was my relatively worst year as far as grades, and I know UMich recalculates GPAs using 10th and 11th grade semester grades.

Courseload: My courseload has gotten more and more difficult between 9th grade and senior year. This year I am taking 3 AP courses (Statistics, Spanish 5 Lit, and English) and an Honors Course (Twentieth Century World History). For my quarterly grades this year, I have all As and A-s (one B+ in an English AP Seminar worth 0 credits that is not even factored into my GPA. I Technically take 6 courses).

SAT Is: 590M, 660V (first time), 630M, 710V (second time)

SAT IIs: Writing (800), U.S. History (740), I took the Math IC (630, yuck) on November 6th, but I don't know if I will send it since they have the History and Writing scores to look at. I had a terrible testing experience for the Math test, hot room, chair kicker behind me.

AP Scores: 5 on U.S. History AP, I will be taking the Stat, Spanish Lit, and English APs in the Spring of 2005.

Intended Major: Political Science

I visited the University on Tuesday and Wednesday (Nov. 16th and 17th), and I met with the admissions person from my area, so hopefully that will help.

Athletics:
I row crew competitively. I have been on the Varsity 8-man boat for my team for 3 years.

Other EC'S:

I have been the co-President of the music club in my school for two years now, and I have been a member for all four years of HS. I am the lead guitarist in this club as well. 2hrs/week

Winter Music - guitarist in pit band in 2004, scheduled to play again in 2005. 4 hrs/week

The Stereotones - the rock band of which I am the lead guitarist and singer for. I write all the song and I founded the band. 6hrs/week

Ian Hartsough Jazz Quintent - i was the lead guitarist in this jazz group.

Wax Machine - I play in this live r and b/soul band. 4hrs/week

Calliope - My school's literary magazine. I am a critic and contributor. 2 hrs/week

Parnassus - my school's foreign language literary magazine. I am a critic and contributor as well. 2hrs/week

Work experience:

I was the summer studio assistant for a recording studio in 2002. (38hrs/week)
I was the summertime manager for a coffee shop in 2003. (37 hrs/ week)
I worked for a Real estate company in the summer of 2004 that specialized in low income housing. I was an office assistant and assistant to the CEO. (37 hrs/ week)

*I have a great cd I recorded with my jazz group, should I send that in along with the optional essay, or is the optional essay sort of an unused part of the app?

That about covers it. Unfortunately, I do not have any legacy at UMich, but there have been kids from my school who have gone there in the past and done well.

Thank you Alexandre, I am feeling so stressed now.

And I forgot, with the Michigan GPA recalculation i have a 3.85. I called a few weeks ago and they said the app was already under review.

I am glad you are stressing. This is a serious step in your education. You wouldn't be normal if you did not stress. But you are a solid candidate. Your 3.85 GPA and 1340 on your SAT will certainly make you a competitive applicant. Your chances are good but not great, which is the case for most applicants who end up getting accepted into Michigan. You should hear back from Michigan any day now. Keep us posted.

Thanks Alexandre. I am just waiting for that letter. I actually had a phenomenal time in Ann Arbor when I was there last week, I got to see the student jazz bands perform at the MacIntosh theatre, which was awesome.
