I am a freshman, currently doing Geometry with an A. My goal is to take AP Calculus AB in 12th grade. Thinking of taking Algebra 2 at Lawrenceville School in summer (no, I don't go to Lawrenceville) and then taking Pre-calc in 10th grade, Calculus in 11th grade and AP Calc AB in 12th. Does this sound like the sequence that many high school students take? Thanks.

Sequence, yes. But I no nobody personally who takes classes over the summer. At my school, standard sequence is:

9th-Geometry
10th-Algebra II/Trig
11th-Pre-Calc
12th- Calc or AP Calc (if AP Calc, they usually take Pre-Calc and Calc in 11th)

Some just go straight to AP Calc without previous Calc…some take AP Stats 12th too. If you want to, and think you can handle a summer class, go for it.

At my D’s school, the sequence would be Pre-Calc in 11th and Calc AB or BC in 12th. There’s no need to take non-AP Calc before Calc AB, or even Calc AB before Calc BC.

If the summer class is intended to be taken by high-performing students who want to accelerate, sure. If it’s a credit-recovery class intended to be taken by juniors who couldn’t pass school-year Algebra II and are in danger of not graduating without passing the summer class, IMHO you’re unlikely to get the foundation you need for Calc.

It is unnecessary that you take the class over the summer. Not only is it a bad idea to take a class with as many concepts as Algebra 2 over the summer, but you will be able to take Calc even if you don’t take the summer class…

The sequence normally is pre-calc followed by calc AB or BC. So if the goal is to do AP in 12th, there is no need to do something in summer.
