CoE students have to take an Algorithmic Thinking Exam. Could anyone tell me what exactly that exam entails? Stuff like what sort of questions are going to be on it and what format is the exam in?

Where do you see this?

When I enrolled I didn’t have this. What do the results of this test do?

The entire purpose of the exam is to determine whether you should be placed in ENGR 101 (intro to programming) or ENGR 151 (accelerated intro to programming). If you have significant experience with coding, you should probably find it pretty easy. If you don’t have much experience, it will probably kick your butt.

Last year, the placement exam was only 20 multiple choice questions, and it didn’t take long at all to complete. It primarily asked questions about provided pseudo code to determine your ability to logically work through code. They also asked some questions to gauge your familiarity with some pretty basic CS concepts like binary math.

Ah, alright, thanks.

I guess that exam was added not too many years ago.

I never had it, so it must have been added within the last 2 years. I just registered for Engr 151 on my own because I took AP Comp Sci in Hugh school. Looking back, there wasn’t much of a point. I know slightly more programming than the average ME but I don’t really use it. I guess it helps some with just thinking in algorithms.

Weirdest group of kids you’ll ever have in a class, even for EECS majors. It’ll be like 97% guys and they’ll all be weird as hell. Some normal ones… but not the kids the code for fun and like to show off how much they know in class while talking about anime and computers etc etc

I mean, I’m an engineer too, so clearly I’m a little different. But these guys… man
