same situation as you guys… I filled out the form to get into the Bus Econ major at orientation and was told everything was ready to go, but now I can’t register for the upper division classes that I want. So frustrating watching all the classes you want to take fill up every time you refresh… I have a feeling there is going to be a flood of calls tomorrow morning.

To be honest I was not really impressed with how the econ department handled the advising during orientation. Granted it is one of the most, if not the most, popular majors at UCSB. It seemed that they were understaffed and unable to answer all of our questions, and now we see all these problems arising. I hope you guys get it all sorted out tomorrow, best of luck to you all.

I went to transfer orientation and received a list of electives that don’t require pre-reqs. Unfortunately, I have no idea where I put that freaking thing and I need another class or two to fill up my schedule.

Can anyone look at theirs and jot them down or scan them?

they’re all full dude, i checked…

That obama class was still open last I checked…

Yeah my orientation selection was ****ty. I got stuck with intro to oceanography and art history (at 9:30 am no less). I did get one class I wanted, psych 1. EVERYTHING was full within seconds, what a crappy situation. If this is how it goes for the next quarter, I’m transferring out.

Sorry to say this, but my department[Film] held 2 classes per transfer student, so I was able to get 2 classes easily. That being said, it was still a b 1 t5h to find classes pertaining to my major, while the only other things are offered were electives. I mean, I don’t mind electives, but I’m a little sick and tired of having to take more classes not related to my major after having just gone through 60 units of that…

I think transfers should be guaranteed 3 classes since many of us have scholarships, grants, etc. riding on us having at least 12 units.

Anybody get in contact with the econ department to get cleared to add classes? Phones are non stop busy…

I’m Pre-economics transfer. most of the classes are full as ****. I only have one class right now, should i go fill the remaining spots with whatever class available or try to add in person when instruction begins?

@heat
Just keep calling, it took me a long time but I finally got through.

Good call on that class. i got 15 units now. bla-dow!

I see that the transfer students (mainly economic majors) are having trouble getting all their classes. How is this not somewhat expected? The CC’s are overloaded and underfunded and the CSU’s are cutting back considerably. The UC’s have tried to keep the quality high, but raised their prices considerably. So now we are getting more students wanting to transfer in. I doubt the UC’s priority is going to be getting students that didn’t pay into the UC system for the first 2 years on track immediately so they can graduate in 2 years. It is the very nature of being a transfer student, and should have been considered with the decision to transfer. UCSB does a pretty good job of advising freshmen students how they could get out in 4 years, but that is partly at the expense of the transfer students.

Transfer students need to work the system by contacting advisors and crashing classes. They need to sign up for a full load with the hopes that they can change a class to a better one by the deadline. Next quarter, they should have better priority. You can look at past winter and spring quarters to get a pretty good idea of what will be offered this winter and spring. Spend a bunch of time on the online catalog and determine every class you still need, when they are offered, and what the pre-requisites are. For this quarter, find a GE course or two that gives you credit in multiple GE areas. This may be a quarter that you need to take a class that doesn’t interest you much, but counts toward your writing requirement along with an A-G requirement.

We knew it was going to be difficult to get all the classes we wanted, but we did not anticipate being unable to get those classes because of administration error. Several people on this thread have stated that they are in the major as opposed to the pre major, however, they are unable to register for UD classes because of some sort of mix up.

We were told that if we weren’t able to get classes pertaining to our majors, then that would be no problem, just take some electives to fill out the schedule. Unfortunately, almost all these classes are taken too, despite the fact that we were told we would be able to take a full load without taking unnecessary classes.

If you want to ‘crash’ a class in hopes of being added do you also crash the discussion section?

@maybetomorrow & tfizzle

I am also having an approval code issue, this is freaking ■■■■■■■■. Everything is full for me basically. Thank god spots in 1 of my pre-major classes opened up after being full and I was able to get a spot. As of now, my new student profile still isnt completed so I have no idea what to even take. For some of the BA requirements in special subject area, that is where I am most confused.

msant: Actually I just needed one of my pre-req courses approved, but the adviser didn’t get back to me until this morning. By then I was approved and I didn’t even have to call in this morning. If you haven’t you really should try to call the ugrad econ office tomorrow morning and try to get the whole thing sorted out.

I know my New Profile won’t be complete because I just sent out my IGETC certification today. So I’ll probably have to wait until October to have that updated.

Yeah, I’m partially confused as to what I should take to fulfill all those new requirements. Mainly because a lot of the offered courses do not interest me or are limited to majors only. Also I’m really scared, because I believe all the econ courses are only 4 units, so it’s looking as if every quarter I’ll only have about 12-16 units. Right now I only have 12, that’s like bare minimum and I tried to find a class for MW since all my other classes are TRF but I couldn’t really find anything.
But keep trying, eventually we’ll all get the hang of this. My biggest concern really though is if I can pay for it all.

I don’t know about transfers, but when my son went to Freshman orientation, he was THE LAST PERSON to register in his session and had only 9 units with a 9:30 AM Calculus class. He could not get anything. So, we visited the orientation staff at the end of the day and they found a communications class for him at 8AM. He is not happy about the time, but that is how it goes.

He was not able to alter his schedule at all in the ensuing days that his regsitration window was open. HOWEVER, he selected classes that he wanted and emailed all of the professors expressing his desire to take the classes. One professor told to him to keep trying when his registration opens for pass 3, but if he still can’t get the class, to come and see him the first day of class and he will add him. All of the other profs were very nice also and sent him the link to their electronic waitlist.

This is something I forgot to mention. During your registration window, classes open up. be sure to live at your computer during those days, and you might stumble on an opening.

Remember too that your priority will improve after this quarter, so you might have to bite the bullet for one quarter with a less than ideal schedule.

How does it work if you’re in the Honors College, if you know? I have Pass Time 2 (couldn’t go to orientation). Would I still be able to get priority?

@Halie

I too am in the honors program, but I did not get priority registration this quarter. I don’t think that kicks in until the second quarter.
