I just want to get a general idea of whether or not most international applicants to Penn are applying for aid. Please post ur stats and whether or not u applied for aid. Also, if u applied ED, post the result, but above all, please specify if u applied for aid

Canadian applicant, applied ED and for aid.
Accepted, but I don't think I received any aid...
I've heard out of the Ivy League schools, Penn typically gives less aid than the other ones do...

A friend of mine, also Canadian, also applied for ED and for aid.
He was deferred.

Why are you so fixated on this issue?

dude this is your 3rd thread about the same thing in 20 minutes

CDN_dancer ur not really international in the same way as the ones applying from asia, europe etc cuz Penn is need blind for u guys (canadians + mexicans etc) but not need blind for us guys.....im fixated on this issue cuz i want to see the stats of an internaitonal student (not canadian) who got accepted WITH AID...

Ipm currently a freshman at penn. I applied last year, as an international asking for aid, and got accepted. My stats were ( as I remember them) 3.9 GPA, SATS: 800V, 740M, 730W...SAT IIs: 790Math II, 800 spanish, 740 lit., 680 bio. a bunch of ECs but main one was music. I´ve played guitar for 7 yrs and my band won fourth place in a national contest. That was pretty much it. I asked for a considerable amount of aid ( about 25k) and, although I initially just received 18k, I was able to get a reevaluation that brought me up to th 25k I needed. Hope this helps.

megaman which country are u from, and which school and program did u appply do? dang you must have some amazing stats

Don't get too hung up on stats. It's easy to get discouraged if you see someone who has higher stats than you.

Just focus on doing your application as best as you can. If it is evident to the admissions committee that you are truly passionate about attending and that they would be foolish to reject you, you'll be fine. Stats are just numbers, and numbers can only say so much about a student.

by stats i also meant non numerical stuff like ECs and awards etc.....i think that international kids who get in with financial aid must have some amazing stats...i didnt apply for any aid at all and got deferred from ED for M&T...hope i dont get rejected lol

The thing with admissions to places like Penn is that it is so hard to predict who gets in and who doesn't. So many factors go into the admissions decision, many of which are very subjective. If admissions were based solely on numbers, then yes, it would be very easy to predict who gets in and who doesn't, but the fact of the matter is that that isn't the case. I'm sure we've all heard that schools like Penn could fill their classes several times over with fully qualified applicants.

All you can really do is do your best on your own application, and hope that the admissions officers see something special in your application, see that you belong on the campus. If not, and you end up at another school, quite likely you will find that you will love it there, maybe even more so than Penn. It's all about "fit."

quag_mire: I`m from costa rica. I applied to CAS

Quag_mire, I know someone who got in last year at my school (mid-atlantic public, graduating class of 500) with a 3.9ish, 2300s, really good APs, really strong science stuff, and only came to America in 11th grade, isn't asian (eastern european), english was fine though. no green card, got considerable amount of aid. chose another school though so the aid couldnt have been THAT amazing.

i myself am an international applying for aid as well (new zealander asian kid) except I go to an American high school. My stats follow: 2270 SAT I, 34 ACT, 3.91 UW, 4.67 W, SAT IIs were 800 Math II, 790 Chem, 730 US history. 5 on APs chem english lang psych world history Us history US govt. Science stuff (internships at georgetown U & a biotech company); public speaking county/state awards in mock trial, LD debate, original oratory, public forum debate; state music awards; honor societies; activities administrator at retirement home; started mentoring program for at-risk kids at school.

Anyways the point is I dont think that we, as internationals, really know what we're up against. we could be facing some amazing piano virtuoso from the Czech republic or something, and obivously the college would want to get this kid here instead of me or some other guy because they've got kids in their regular freshman applicant pool who are just as, if not more competitive than we are and who don't need as much money because they're eligible for FAFSA and other scholarship things. I dunno, it's just my thought and might be totally wrong but I can't help but think the really competitive kids who apply overseas in these countries around the world just take up a lot of international spots that average international kids might not be able to get access to because the spots are just so limited. but hey, no matter what, we're getting screwed somewhere in the process no matter if it's financial aid or decisions at most colleges in the US. here's to hoping we dont get screwed THAT much! sorry about this huge essay im bored

blindhope thanks a lot for the feedback, im kinda similar to that eastern european kid u spoke about lol cuz i moved to the US in the middle of 11th grade too...im not applying for financial aid though and i applied ED to the M&T program and got deferred.....what ive observed is that those piano virtuosos from the Czech republic u spoke about, many of those types get outright rejected cuz they ask for too much aid....ive noticed many such cases of exceptional internationals getting rejected cuz they ask for aid....so this put the hope in me that since im not applying for aid, i should have a significant boost in my chances of getting into a school like U Penn, which is NOT need blind for us guys...but i got deferred so i dont know wats going to happen next...

Hello,

I know my SAT 1 score was a lil low , but last year my school sent 5 ppl to penn, 1 from ED( who has fantastic stats but a SAT only a lil higher than mine and he applied for FA) to wharton , and 4 from RD who had similar (at best) if not lower stats than mine ( 2 of em had virtually the same SAT score as me)

I was really dissapointed coz penn was my dream school and I was convinced i was going (coz of the 4 ppl with stats like mine who got in) but ah well...

really sry for the ranting :(

som1. im surprised u got rejected from CAS, when ur friend who applied for FA got accepted in Wharton....but yea, considering that so many kids from your school applied to Penn, u did have increased competition, otherwise, if others from your school didnt apply, then u surely would have gotten in

About 90% of internationals applying to Penn ask for aid. Although Penn is more commited to internationals than most, there is little money. Friends and family in India call me regularly about kids who want to go to top US colleges on aid. I tell them full aid is nearly impossible and even modest aid is for the stars from each country.

Newsweek pointed out in a story this issue that colleges are heavily recruiting full paying international students. They will need then in the next decades as the number of American kids of college age will sharply drop.

These colleges have gone all over the world and stirred up interest among those who can't pay too. The result is a glut of applicants from India and Korea (among others) who are bright but not exceptional on a national level who can not possibly get in with the aid they need.

My relative who applied last year got letters from many colleges saying he would be accepted if he could pay. I guess some kids have $200,000 hidden in India!

thanks for the info ceebrown, im from india too, applying without aid to Penn (deferred ED, M&T)....about your first sentence, "About 90% of internationals applying to Penn ask for aid.", how sure are you of that, and if thats true, i can assume those not applying for aid are at a significant advantage right? also can you give me a link to that newsweek article.....

DUDE, I was the only one who applied ED to CAS , the kids im talking about who got in were from last year :(
