I was thinking about applying to Spelman but I don't think I could do the whole all black girl thing.

I have till like November to finish all these applications

how do you guys feel about traditionally black schools? like morehouse or something. personally i wouldnt, but what do yall think?

its good in some ways, but id rather go to a diverse school

what would happen if there was a 'all my white females' thread?

well..HBCUs are an outdated concept. They served their purpose during times in which african americans couldn't go to better and more financially endowed colleges, but today's HBCU's are severely underfunded, they perform poorly, and they cannot even retain the best of the african american race (hence the poaching by HYPS, as well as SEVERAL new england private schools and especially LACS).

as a matter of fact, I created a thread on acceptance rates for black students at williams, amherst, and middlebury college, all EXTREMELY difficult colleges to gain admission to. However, middlebury takes 70% of all black students that apply, williams and amherst take 50%. Thus, I can't understand why any black student would attend an HBCU given the smorgasbord of opportunity in new england. I, myself, am vying for a new-enland-private-school full scholarship - believe me when I say there are plenty of schools that are in dire need of black students...

ESPECIALLY BLACK MALES. we are the RAREST commodity in college admissions, and should use this as an ADVANTAGE. Most schools do not wish to only take black females, they want black males as well, which makes us a DOUBLE minority in college admissions..

As a side note, I think very lowly of bill cosby after his address at the commencement of spelman graduates...he basically said that black WOMEN would have to take charge, because black MEN are no good..he, like many black people, has no faith in black males...

My college list:

Reaches:
1] Cornell- CALS/AEM $$ ED 20% Ithica,NY
1] MIT(?) $$ EA 32% Cambridge,MA

Matches:

Safety:
S] UMCP(++) $$$*R 52% College Park, MD

1] New York

Nothing.

[/quote]

Basically the same reason as someone else said, diversity. Plus, I've been going to predominately black schools all my life. I just want to try something different.

These are the schools I'm looking at. Once I visit them, I know my list will shrink.

Havard
Yale
Columbia
Brown
UPenn
UMich
Northeastern
Syracuse
Northwestern
Mich State

I'm thinking about majoring in engineering, maybe chemical. I don't know though. I'll probably put I'm undecided.

one last note:

it doesn't matter what school you go to, spelman has only a slightly higher female population than most HBCUs. (Spelman: 100%, Howard, 67%...etc.)

chances are whatever HBCU you may be looking at, there will be mostly girls.

Rice
USC
Brown
Northwestern
WUSTL
Emory
University of Houston

I see the pros and cons of HBCUs; I considered a few HBCUs, but then I looked at their student life sections, and many of the rules were extremely strict, but I have also found that many of them have great school spirit (love the battle of the bands). I see the benefits of having HBCUs, but they just aren't for me.

This thread could be beneficial, but can someone atleast get a mod to rename the thread? I smell controversy a mile away.

Then people would be extremely offended about it. God forbid there's a thread specifically for white people, just like there is for blacks and other minorities.

im planning on applying to a bunch of instate colleges(my parents dont want to use loans and there's the HOPE scholarship)

UGA's my top choice

i'm either going to college on a full $120,000 scholarship to Babson or borrowing $100,000 to go to MIT or Cornell.

this is all coming from a black male. Just thought it might be beneficial to include males too..

how do you guys get those kinds of scholarships?

There's a ton of ones that you can enter online. I'm not sure how many are actually real, though.

You apply for them through the offices. There are other ways and other foundations. If you needed a full one you would have to earn it.

blueflame:

i'm replying to your message on the board because the information might be beneficial to others.

It's easy to get full scholarships, you just have to know of them. HBCUs are famous for giving full scholarships. I knw for sure that howard gives full tuition, fees, books, and room & board to all National Achievement finalists, based on PSAT results. I received a score of 194 on the PSAT, and was contacted by Ohio State and Howard, basically stating that full scholarships were available for National Achievement Finalists, and that I would probably be a finalist. I also know that Florida A&M pays for plane flights ad accomodations for Natinal Achievement finalists. Nearly every HBCU will give a Natioanl Achievement Finalist a full ride.

As for Babson, they automatically enter Afircan Americans into a scholarship program called the Endeavor Scholarship. The strongest black applicants are awarded Endeavor Scholarships; if the school already likes you, they'll let you know you have a good chance of receving a full ride.
