I'm picking up on these essay posts because S is going through this right now too. We bought the Harry Bauld (yes, Hairy Bald) book "On Writing the College Application Essay," that was recommended here on CC. S. had already written one academic-sounding, fact-filled essay about a favorite topic. After reading that book he decided to start over and try to use a somewhat more personal approach. I think he is probably trying to find a compromise somewhere in between the two types. For many people I think it is much easier to write about something (anything!) other than yourself.

Admissions people already have your transcript, so can tell from that what you've taken in HS. The essay is your only chance to tell them about yourself in your own words. Some college websites even help you out by providing examples of "Essays that Worked" from previous classes' admissions (Connecticut College is one). We were floored by the level of "personal-ness" in some of the essays. There are some very sophisticated, very creative writers out there. That said, I also think you have to do what YOU are comfortable with. If you are a more analytical type you could even touch on that in your essay. Good luck!!
