not really, only some of them.
the question is....

I asked my senior year AP english teacher and sophomore year AP Chemistry teacher for reccomendations, and my AP art teacher who I've had from sophomore till senior year is writing a letter as well.

Then I read that Duke wants 11th and 12th grade teachers to write reccomendations. What do i do???
I REALLY want to send a rec from my chemistry teacher, even though I had her in sophomore year. Plus, I tutor chemistry, got a 5 on the AP chem, and volunteered for her the summer before jr year.

Should it suffice that my AP art and AP english teachers are 12th grade teachers? Art may not be considered academic to them, but I plan to double major in art and chemistry, so it's academic to me

Please give me your opinion. I wouldnt want to comprimise my admissions for not following directions.
THankyou for your help :)

I think that they'd consider Art being academic... I just don't think they wanted you to send in a rec from that gym teacher that you were really good friends with

This is just my opinion, not an informed reply, but I agree that to be safe, you should have two current (11-12 grade) recs to send, and maybe if you indicate that you want to major in Art/Chem, the art teacher rec would qualify and be appropriate as one of those. I definitely think you should also have the Chemistry teacher send a recommendation if your current science teachers aren't likely to write a strong rec. Are you currently still tutoring students? If so, then perhaps that will qualify--the Chem teacher might be serving as an advisor/mentor of sorts during your 11/12 years and maybe she can mention in the rec that she has known you since sophomore year but worked closely with you since (you volunteered for her, etc.) Be safe and supply what they ask for, but don't hesitate to send that chem rec. Good luck.
