Some of them even huge reaches.Am I crazy or did anybody else do the same thing.Because I just can't imagine myself anywhere else.I just have this feeling in the back of my head that I know I'm going to be accepted to atleast one of them.

um lol, no offense, but i cant help noticing that your name is commonsense... you shouldve applied to at least one safety (a state school perhaps).

I applied to 5 reaches and 1 safe-match. I got into my safe-match, I have to wait a few months for the reaches.

Are you telling me you don't even have 1 safety?

Yes, you are crazy.

If all of your schools are reaches, that was incredibly foolish.

Well all of my safety schools don't have deadlines so I'm just waiting till I hear from all of the other schools.I could probably apply to some of the safties in May and still be accepted.

I think it is a little excessive. You need to have two safeties, and you should have maybe two matches. The rest is up to you. If you are happy with your safeties and matches, then that's fine. If you want to have a couple reaches and another match, then I think that's fine, too. If you take all of the lower ends of those numbers, though, you come up with eight schools. The higher end is twelve. I think that 4-9 schools is best. I applied to seven.

"Probably"? You don't even have a plan for those safeties?

i have like 5 reaches and 5 safeties. and i already got into the safetest of the safe.

i got 3 safeties, 4 reaches, and 1 reach-match. i already got into 1 safety.

Commonsense,

I know you plan on applying to those safeties in May if you need to, but please go ahead and apply to at least one that's a sure bet. Since they are (I'm assuming) rolling admissions, you'll probably find out soon (sooner than you reaches, at least) and that would alleviate any concerns you have. That way, you know you'll be going to college somewhere this fall, right?. Also, with some schools, the sooner you apply, the more likely you are to receive good finaid offers.

Safe bet schools usually have fairly simple applications, and there's absolutely no reason to put off doing them. Knock one out this weekend.

Best of luck in your reach school decisions, but prepare yourself for the worst case scenario and start shopping around for a safety school you're happy about.

Also, as warbler suggested, read andison's story. It's definitely an important lesson to learn- it could happen to anyone.

Just out of curiosity, what are your reaches, if you don't mind me asking?

"my guidance counselor said to have 2-3 safeties, 4-6 matches, and 2-3 reaches, do you think thats a bit excessive?"

I think that's a bit excessive. I applied to 10 schools total. 2 were safeties (accepted EA/rolling). 1 was a match (just accepted). 1 to 2 were slight reaches. While 3 to 4 were reaches. And finally, two were major reaches (reaches for everyone). Once you get into a safety or match u'd be happy at, then you can do as many reasonable reaches as you feel you could see yourself at. I just have to wait a few more months for my reaches, but I know I could go somewhere that I'd like (and a really good school).

You see the reason I put "reach" in quatation marks is because they're reach schools only because of the unusual circumstanes that I had delt with in the past.It weren't for them these schools would probably be in the match very slight reach area.

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Wisconsin-Madison
George Washington
Boston College
Emory

Well ... I'm in the same boat, except that I sent my UC app to a lot
of UC's ... spent those extra $50 application fee $$.

Here' my list and where I stand now ...
Stanford SCEA - Denied
Wharton - Reach
NYU Stern - reach/match, no scholarships
USC Marshall - reach/match, no scholarships
UC Berkeley - reach/match
UCLA - reach/match
UCSD - match
UCSB - safety
UCI - saffety, doubt I'll go there
UCD - safety, doubt I'll go there
DeAnza - last resort JC, possible transfer to UCB/UCLA

i applied to 9 reaches, 2 matches and 3 safeties...haha.

2 safeties, 7 reaches!

Although, 3 of my reaches are high reaches, the rest are more slight reaches than good matches (I figure no school that's top 50 LAC/University material can be considered a match).

"You see the reason I put "reach" in quatation marks is because they're reach schools only because of the unusual circumstanes that I had delt with in the past.It weren't for them these schools would probably be in the match very slight reach area."

Don't kid yourself. Based on what you posted, those schools are reach schools, without any quotes.

You would be far better off applying NOW to some safeties (safeties that you know that you'd enjoy attending) so as to have something in the bag come April.

This is going to be the most competitive year in history for college admissions. That's because of the size of this year's senior class. Don't leave yourself out in the cold by somehow thinking that applying to lots of reach schools means you'll definitely get in some place. People who have done things like that have had some major disappointments in April.

I also notice that you posted Jan. 24 about still working on your college applications. The later that one applies to rolling admission schools, the lower your chances of admission as their standards get higher as their classes fill up.

I can not emphasize more strongly that you need to put some excellent applications in now to safety schools. Keep in mind, too, that if you wait until April, schools that would have been safeties if you'd applied earlier in the year may have few spaces left and may be closer to reach schools. This particularly will be true if due to depression over rejection and due to upcoming finals your application essays are weak or your application is sloppy.

i had one safety and the rest reaches (HYPColBroDuke, but they're reaches for everyone).. actually, hopkins might be a lower reach. I got into my safety, binghamton, so at least I'm going to college.
