How many colleges are you applying to, including UCs? I'm afraid the number of schools I'm applying to is kind of high (12-14, but 4 UCs), but maybe not? What's a good number of schools to apply to when one is applying to 2+ UCs also?

normally, when we apply to UC's, count them as 1 college. UC's only have one app, and you pay 60 bucks for each campus you want to apply to.

12 -14 schools is not too high a number to apply to given that this is a very competitive year, with a great # of students applying. UCLA for example had 12,574 admits out of 55,406 applicants (undergrads) in 2008, admission rate of 22.7%. University of California - Admissions
You can check the admission rates at all UCs in through the above link.

It's advisable to apply to various UCs to give oneself a chance for admission, both to matches and safeties. Too many kids in my D's school got into only one or two and not into others, even with their stats appearing to be in range. Things are just too unpredictable. If you can manage the fee for a number of UCs, I would apply to any you would be happy to attend.

Same applies to other schools. I'd say 3 safeties, 4 or 5 matches, and 3 to 5 reaches (if you have dream schools and your stats are within the range) would make sense.

8 plus Cambridge (LOLOLOL) and UCB for a total of 10...
AAAACK!!

I used the UC's mostly as matches and safeties. I applied to 14 schools with 5 UC's and 2 CSU full ride scholarships as back-ups.

Okay, good. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being a little over zealous, considering it is a competitive year. For someone reaching for Ivies + Stanford/MIT, UCSB could be considered a safety, right?
