Allegheny vs. Hobart William & Smith

These are two comparable schools to which I've been accepted. I plan on majoring in biomedical science/biology and want to know which college has a better Pre-Medical Program. I'm aware that HWS is much more expensive, but for the sake of this argument, let's assume they both cost the same. I'm also very interested in any information regarding...

the surrounding area

student life

study abroad

Music Opportunities

research

I'm also considering SUNY Binghamton and SUNY at Buffalo if you have any knowledge of either.

COME ON PEOPLE!! I’m in dire need of help!!

Toured Allegheny last week with my daughter so I have a little information regarding them, but not the other school.

  1. “surrounding area”- Allegheny is in Meadville, kind of in the middle of nowhere but close to Erie and about an hour and 40 minutes from PGH. If you have read other posts on this site, kids that strongly desire a city envirnoment do not like the location. Our tour guide said that most kids stay on campus over the weekend and that she rarely goes home and even cut her most recent break at home short because she felt she was missing things at school. The campus itself is beautiful.
2 Student life- seems like they offer a good life quality, many clubs & activities, very nice campus. Free New York Times ( I liked this better than my daughter!), many living options, the food we had was good.
  2. Study Abroad - Interviewer told us that a little more than half the students study abroad. Tour guide said that it was really doable, an extra $350 and your air fare. She had studied in London.
3. Music Opportunities - Sounds like they are numerous. I think the tour guide mentioned something about people who are majoring or minoring is music related fields but I did not really pay attention to that because my daughter has no interest is pursuing music that seriously, but does have interest in casual music settings. The tour guide said that there is an abundance of those opportunities available, I believe she said she belonged to more than one informal music group.
  4. research- available and since there are no grad students the undergrads are given opportuniities they may not receive in other schools. I saw somewhere that the new science building is second in facilities to Columbia, not sure how accurate that is.

Hope this helps, I assume you have narrowed your choice down to these 2 schools.

I don’t know anything about HWS, but Allegheny is a fine school. I believe they have a pretty good record on med school admissions. And research is required. Every student has to do a comprehensive senior project regardless of major. Professors are very accessible and involved actively involved in many aspects of campus life. The science facilities are quite good as well. If Allegheny is significantly less expensive, it is a great choice.
