Already receiving spam in Cmail?

Hi. I noticed that I'm already receiving spam in my cmail account. I'm an incoming freshman. I haven't used my account to sign up for anything, and I haven't even sent any messages from it (except to a teacher, long story), so there is no way that I should get spammed already. I have used it in resumes, but I am pretty sure that is not the issue.

The messages come addressed to a whole bunch of people with cornell addresses. They are about the same configuration as mine (in terms of letters). The message is always like "Buy cialis!" or "get your meds here!" or some thing like that.

I have received 5 such messages this week. I just received one 10mins ago, and it's marked PMX:###. Is this something I should be concerned about, or is this to be expected for college email? My HS email address has been used for 4yrs, and I never got any spam in it. Can CIT do anything about it?

That’s really strange, like you I am incoming freshman, but the only mail I’ve gotten is the regular “adv engineering” ones. It may be that someone may be explicitly targeting you, or that if your name is common - perhaps they have mistaken you with someone else in the servlist. Or you may be victim to a randomized spam attack hosted by some third parties… In any case, it doesn’t seem something to worry over, as long as you don’t open any links or download any attachments from those spam senders. Just keep marking them as spam, and hopefully it’ll stop.

I don’t know if it will stop. I just received another one this morning.

It is certainly a targeted attack against Cornell addresses. It kind of sucks that I will have to live with this. I contacted CIT to see if they could help me.

I’ve been getting those emails too…

Ethano, are you in the same situation as me (e.g. you didn’t sign up for anything, and are targeted along with a bunch of other Cornell addresses?).

I’d like to hear from current students/alumni as to how common this actually is.
In the meantime, I have contacted CIT, and will wait their response.

Yeah I’m in the same boat

That really sucks. I just got another one at 11am. That makes 3 today.

Here’s CIT’s response:
“CIT is aware of an increase in the amount of spam getting through our filters. This is affecting all users. We are working on the issue and hope to have spam levels back down in the near future.”

Not very helpful. If anything, the spam is increasing, and I didn’t do anything. I didn’t open any links, didn’t forward anything, didn’t sign up for anything. Why am I being targeted?

It doesn’t seem like something to lose sleep over, I think you may be overreacting. At least you know you aren’t the only one being affected, and it’ll probably get fixed sooner or later. Just keeping marking the emails as spam. If you are feeling adventurous you can always try to get back at the spammers in a number of creative ways. Try to see if the emails contain an opt-out or unsubscribe feature.

My daughter is getting them also. She got 3 today as well. Seems like it’s a system wide problem.

Shouldn’t be a big deal to anyone haha… While it’s annoying, it can’t be as bad as having someone sign you up for SIXTY-TWO online newsletters. That was terrible. =P

Denice Cassaro strikes again!
