Already took Biology, should I retake biology as AP?

My school only offers AP biology every other year. The year I took biology was the regular honors course. Should I ‘retake’ biology as an AP this time around, or just move foward to the next level?

What’s the next level? What science class would you have to sacrifice? What science classes have you already taken?

If you’re interested in a biology-related career, you should totally go for it! Not only will you expand your biology knowledge but it also looks great for colleges. It shows your interest in science and your drive to excel in a subject. Plus, I did a similar thing – bio honors over virtual school, then AP the following year, and it certainly paid off. AP is AP so you should go for it, just as long as you LIKE what you’re doing. Please don’t just do it for the prestige of an AP class or putting it on an application, ya know?

BEST OF LUCK xox

It for sure depends on your possible career choices. If i where you however i would take a new class just to expand your knowledge and become a more well rounded student and person. Good luck

@ambers58, the next course level would be Chemistry.

@aeonian pretty standard at my school. People take Bio as freshman, Chem/Physics as sophomore, and then go wild junior year. I took Bio as a freshman, Chem H as a sophomore, and then AP Chem as a junior. Other friends have opted to go into AP Bio, Physics, or APES their junior year.

At my school, the advanced science sequence goes
Freshman year - Honors Bio
Sophomore year - Honors Chem
Junior year - Honors Physics AND AP bio/AP chem/APES
Senior year - AP Bio, AP Chem, AP Physics C, or APES

I would expect that by the end of high school, you’ll have at least one bio, chem, and physics class. If you can fit all three in before the end of high school, then yeah, go for it.

By taking the AP version of a course after having taken the regular/honors version, you aren’t retaking the course - rather, you’re showing your interest and dedication to the subject. As the other posters said above, the typical sequence of science courses is biology -> chemistry -> AP biology, AP chemistry, or other science courses, such as physics, APES, anatomy, etc. So if you aren’t that interested in biology, you might want to think about getting in that chemistry course or trying out another science course. Colleges like to see that you have taken at least two of the three main sciences, which are biology, chemistry, and physics.

The sequence at my school is
Freshman year-Bio no honors for freshmen unless skip and go to honors/regular chem
Sophomore-Honors Chem or for advanced Ap Bio
Junior Year-Any sort of Ap like ES, Bio, Physics, Honors anatomy and Physiology, and Chem
Senior Year-Mostly Ap Physics
The point is everyone finishes all Ap sciences by high school through self studying or courses through skipping at summer school and what not.
Ap bio after bio I believe is a good path based on your major though.

You would not be “retaking” bio. Honors bio is a typical HS course. AP Bio is a first-level college course and will cover bio in much more breadth and depth. If it’s offered every other year, and you’ll be a sophomore, I’d hold off AP Bio until senior year and take chem next year.
