Alright Common App Essay Topic??

For my common app essay, I chose TOPIC OF YOUR CHOICE. I wrote about how I've never really been comfortable enough to be myself and have pretended to be someone else in order to gain the acceptance of my peers. I realized about a year ago that I shouldn't care so much about impressing people who really have nothing in common with me. I now have friends in my classes who I actually have fun with and who share my interests. We go talk about politics at cici's and play racquetball on tuesday afternoons. I am happy for the first time in my life... This isn't the way the essay is written but its the basic premise. Is this an alright topic? (applying Rice ED)

For my Rice supplement I am writing about something personal.. The topic is how will your life experiences bring contribute to diversity at Rice?. I wrote about how my father hasn't been a part of my life since I was 11 and how I have always wanted a father figure. My mother got into a serious relationship with a man who I felt was becoming a father to me. He turned out to be a con man and now we are largely in debt. From this I learned how to stand on my own to feet and not let others affect me..... Is this alright? I wasn't sure if it was topical..

It sounds like if you combine the two, it could make a good first essay. You are right; your second idea is not on topic. The key words are contribute and diversity. Think about that.

Second topic seems a bit shaky

the topic might take too much time to explain the experience, which won’t give you enough time to explain what you learned

And also, the lesson learned seems a bit negative - just my opinion, but I wouldn’t personally write about “not letting others affect me” - after all, you are going to college, surrounded by thousands of others…

Here is the actual topic for the Rice supplement…
A. The quality of Rice’s academic life and the Residential College System are heavily influenced by the unique life experiences and cultural traditions each student brings. What perspective do you feel that you will contribute to life at Rice? (Most applicants are able to respond successfully in two to three double-spaced pages.)
