The state orchestra and band competitions start next weekend here. The state level competition is the following weekend. Of course it falls on the same date my D and numerous others are scheduled to take the SAT. D and several students approached the orchestra director to let her know that IF they should make it to the state level competition they are taking the SAT. D doesn't think their group will make it to the state level so isn't concerned. I think we have to plan for the "what if." The orchestra director indicated that they could take the SAT a couple of days later at an alternate site. While I'm sure the director has been through this before in her 30 some years, it doesn't seem right to me.

Anyone run into something similar in the past or have any insight?

Thanks menloparkmom. I saw that info. The scheduled date is 5/3. The director made it sound like they could take it elsewhere on 5/6. That's why I'm questioning it. I think I'll call collegeboard tomorrow.

This is D's first sitting, and she's just finishing up some test prep so really wants to take in on 5/3. June is for SAT II's for D. Her friend is a Sr, but retaking it in an attempt to pull up her score for a scholarship. My hope is that there are enough jrs/srs in the state that have a potential problem some "secret" accommodation is in place. By that I mean something that is not mentioned on the collegeboard site.

"some "secret" accommodation is in place."
Knowing the collegeboard I highly doubt it. It usually is the kids/outside activities that have to "give"

Yeah, I know spring scheduling is tricky, but I would have thought the state music association would have noticed this MAJOR conflict. In my limited experience many of the band/orchestra students are the type that would be taking SATs. Really poor scheduling seems to be a consistent problem with this organization, ie contests the weekend of a couple HS sports conference meets, etc.

Wow, I just looked at the calendar for this organization. With the exception of the Nov and Dec test dates, they scheduled some sort of event/contest/whatever on every SAT test date and a couple of ACT dates. Just brilliant...As much as I would like this group to make it to the next level, life will be much easier if they don't.

When my son got his marching band schedule last fall, I noticed that they had competitions on all of the fall SAT dates except December. We're trying to get all his testing done now.

When I was in high school one of the big Fall dates was of course the same day as a major band review. I was able to take the test in the same city as the band review and make the performance just in time.

I had a similar problem with the ACT and a water polo tourney. It's not easy to coordinate these things sometimes.

The Collegeboard is pretty strict about its test days and the Sunday alternate test day.

For me, this year the November test day fell on the same day as a major qualifying competition for dance, but I wasn't allowed to write the SAT on Sunday, because my request wasn't for religious reasons (admittedly, I briefly entertained the idea of presenting the dance competition as a religious observance ;))
