Alternative Schools?

Well, I’ve been flat-out rejected, so I will probably be applying to UT-Austin, Dean’s Scholars, and trying to transfer into Stanford. Or, failing that, apply to Stanford for graduate school :(

We’ll see.

The point:

My main points of attraction to Stanford were … everything … from housing (BIG plus) to the shear number of programs to dual-majors to the weather!

Harvard, MIT, Yale, Rice, Beszerkly, Princeton, etc. simply don’t offer a program vaguly similar to Stanford in terms of Physics, Happiness, and Housing/Location.

The quesion:

What schools could be a good <a-hem> “emulator” for the Stanford experience? Right now the only other place I would consider is Princeton, and not too seriously. Does anyone have any other good B-plans? I’be heard University of Chicago mentioned …</a-hem>

definitely NOT University of Chicago

Maybe Washington University St. Louis? They also offer alot of scholarships!

This quote says it all. What I'm looking for in a college and found in Stanford:

" Why Stanford is the Best!
Whatsup fellow '10ers,

This thread is devoted to how much better Stanford is over the rest of the superelite colleges.

--BEST ATHLETICS PROGRAM in the country; Do i hear Director's Cup 13 years running?

--STRONGER PROGRAMS OVERALL; Excels at the most broadest subjects. While HYP are noted for particular areas, Stanford excels at them all

--DIVERSITY; no other college even comes close

--CALIFORNIA WEATHER; self-explanatory

--LOCATED IN A LOVELY AREA; vast, beautiful landscapes, San fransisco, not in some grimy urban area like yale

-- MOST HAPPIEST STUDENTS ranked #1 Check princetonreview.com

--EMPHASIZES INTANGIBLES, CHARACTER, diverse EC's, great perspectives like no other....you can't get in being a soulless person with a 2400 SAT

--LESS ELITISM than the ivy league, especially the bastion of preppy, elitist kids, princeton

--HOTTER students (than HYP) hands down; don't even try to argue

--BEST SOCIAL LIFE (Do i hear Moonsplash, Exotic Erotic, Full moon in the quad?) compare to harvard's "fun czar"

--GREAT FINANCIAL AID; not stubborn like Yale's subpar finny aid offices

--MODERATE POLITICAL ATMOSPHERE I don't want to be only around raging liberals (yale), nor do i want to be surrounded by hardcore conservatives (pton)

--NICEST ADMINISTRATION I've heard so many good things about them. They actually care about the students. Not elitist or unapproachable like some at Harvard and Yale

--LAID BACK ATMOSPHERE just more relaxing, not crazy competitive as if it's the end of the world....chill, enjoy life

--BETTER CALENDER a quarter system means I can take more classes, go abroad without screwing everything up. Why do you think a third of stanford students can go abroad?

--BETTER OVERSEAS OPPURTUNITIES; probably because of the reason directly above

--ENTREPENEURSHIP ATTITUDE; We are going to change the world and make a difference"

Are there any other good matched in these criteria? .... besides Wash-U ....

aw, all those good qualities depress me as I think my chances of getting in are slim...
more slim than I am

look at Duke, it was my #2 choice if I didn't get in, and I spent a lot of time finding what I thought would be my best "stanford replacement"

What do people here think about Vanderbilt?

Schools that are similar, but still mediocre imitations of the "Stanford experience" include Princeton, Duke, UCLA, Northwestern and Penn.

"mediocre imitations of the "Stanford experience""
Haha. Well-put.

I consider Duke and Stanford similar (both on my list). Both are relatively new "amazing" schools. They have strong programs and athletics. Campuses are beautiful. Different from HYP. Stanford is probably better, but I've fallen in love with Duke.

Vanderbilt is definitely a great school. If you are looking for a Stanford emulation, Vandy might be a good choice. It has a great academic reputation (without a doubt one of the elite colleges), and is becoming more and more selective. Downtown Nashville. Decently warm weather (not quite Cali). Hot girls. Lots. Just moved up 4 places on the US News top 20 schools.

pssh. tennessee cant hold a candle to california unless you like rednecks. i definitely doubt it as an elite college, too.

vanderbuilt, northwestern, brown.

All the Ivies for me, and Northwestern

Duke is usually seen as Stanford-East Coast. There's a reason that the two schools generally tie in the US News rankings, are adjacent to one another when it comes to generating winners of the elite scholarships (Rhodes, Marshall, etc(=), and Duke was #3 this year in the all-around sports thing (the Director's Cup), while Stanford was first. Both see themselves as filled with people who are as smart as the ones at HYP but who are cooler and more relaxed. NC is different from California, but many would say that the Duke forest is prettier than the area around Palo Alto.

Northwestern, Vandy, Rice, Pomona, etc. could also be seen as similar.

Frankly, though, I think most of the top 25 schools are quite similar to one another.

Duke is the Stanford of the South. ;) In fact, I think we should refer to the best as the "stanfords". For example, Harvard is the Stanford of the East. Haha.

But for the topic, I think Brown would be similar in the relaxed, chill student body. Duke would be similar in academic rigor/reputation/age/sports. I mean, I agree with zephyr, nothing is really the same as STANFORD. There are schools that have similarities, but nothing is the exact same. Good luck with your choices as I'm sure you'll have many!

why not rice??

why not princeton??? princeton PWNS at physics.

as for happiness and the such... really, my friends and I have recently decided that in the end, it doesnt really matter where you go to college, it'll be fun as hell no matter what.

yea for real, and duke is good too

sorry. but heck no~! the east-coast version of stanford is yale and HArvard and Cornell!!

i dont know about rice, would that be good? it's been voted as one of the campuses around the nation that always has their noses in their books studying... very strong academic reputation, but i dont know if the social life is the same way as stanford

that's strange, the top two colleges on my college list were stanford and duke. maybe i'm just the person that's suited for that kind of smart jock, calm and composed, character.

but for real. if i get accepted to harvard, yale, pton, and every other school, it wont compensate fully for what i think i would have gotten at stanford. i'm still crushed as a stanford SCA reject, and i dont want to hassle with transferring. i vow to work as hard as i can through my undergrad years to possibly get into stanford grad schools.

but seriously. i dont think any school can come to the full stanford experience.

p.s. - i think northwestern is another school very much like stanford, strong athletic programs, cool atmosphere, and excellent programs for students

rice is an excellent school! not only for academics but also for social life! But I bet she'll be happy wherever she chooses to go!
