Alternatives to speech class

It's a required class at my school for the associates degree and csu transfer, but I'm having serious doubts that I'll be able to get through it. My heart thumps out of my chest waiting for my name to be called during attendance because I don't want 30 people to hear me say "here". I almost cried once in a group of 5. If I explained this to a guidance counselor, would they give me an alternative? Would bringing a note from a psychologist or someone help?

The first thing I would do is go see a counselor. I have never heard of anyone bypassing Speech. If Speech is required to transfer and ultimately receive your degree, then I’d imagine you’d need some pretty solid proof you cannot under any case take Speech. There’s a chance they might deny you. A lot of the point of this class is to get over stage fright and be able to put together a good public presentation. At one point in time in your career you are probably going to need to speak in front of a group, small or large.

Go to your school GC, and go from there. You don’t want to waste time going around getting documents if they are going to deny you. Good luck!

i think you should take the class :)

i regert not doing so…ive only head positive things from it. i have bad stage fright too (peed myeslf in a school play in elementary school)

but despite my bad experience…ive been able to make speeches. i just let the audience know i get really nervous haha. but not only will taking this class improve your speech skills it will also help you get over your stage fright, hopefully.

remmeber that almost everyone in that class with you has some sort of stage fright and there is probably someone who has suffered worse than you. ur classmates will become friends because people who suffer together tend to bond together lol.

gl! :D
