Is it bad if my teacher asked me if I want to transfer class?

Hi guys,

I am currently taking an ESL class because I have an accent, so I can't speak very well. Beside that, I could read, write, and listen just fine. The problem is, my teacher thought I am too good to be in her class, and she is worried that I might get bored. She asked me to come to her advanced class and see if I want to transfer.

I have passed a higher level English class last year with an A, but I did really terrible on my speech presentation. The class was English 1C, for those of you who go to El Camino. Her advanced class is on Wednesday, but I have to do my homework so I don't feel like going at all. She asked me what was my reason for coming to this class, and I told her that I couldn't talk because I have an accent. She said she thought my English was really good. Honestly, she heard me talking a few times in class already, and the last time she heard, she misunderstood what I said. And I should know how I sounded like, so I don't know why she said that.

I am not confident in transferring, as I feel more comfortable in my current class. I am just worried that she might think I just want easy credits and would start to dislike or discredit me. I am in an awkward position right now. :(

Come on guys… Any advice? :O

I think you should just let her know your honest feelings – that you really want to work on your speech skills which is why you don’t want to transfer. Let her know that you’re not so confident in speaking (compared to reading/writing) and that you believe this class will help you take the steps you need to get the confidence you need. As a teacher, I would hope she’d understand that you want to improve on your English speaking skills and wouldn’t assume you just want easy credits.
