Alternatives to Summer Programs

My apologies if this isn't quite the right forum for this thread, but:

For those of us who
A) Have never heard of these wonderful summer programs
B) Have been rejected from these wonderful summer programs
C) Have missed the deadlines for these wonderful summer programs
D) Have other activities going on which prevent them from leaving town for long periods at a time
E) Some combination of the above

What else is there to do, that is of equal (or near equal) prestige and value?

As a case study, I've got sports and volunteer/officer work to do that keeps me grounded. Last year I did some history research with a professor at a local university, but seem to be lacking in opportunities this summer.

Getting a job and volunteer work are both great.

I’d like to ‘bump’ this.
I feel like my summer plans are highly insufficient for the schools I’m aiming for D:
Come on, I know there’s a lot of people on CC with those problems T_T

I’m going to “bump” too just because I feel like this is an important thread for a LOT of CC’ers (and potentially me lol)

Just saying, I’ve done research at a university near me in the past  That was pretty neat and there aren’t “deadlines” to “apply” per se. If you can finagle it, it really is a great learning experience.

I’m in the same situation as you HADC10 and mrbh12!
This is like… my last summer to boost my college application hahaha.
But yeah, I’m already volunteering at a local hospital and I’m also planning on attending community college classes and emailing a local professor in hope for an internship-kinda-thing…
Yeahh, what do you guys think you should do?

After being rejected by SSP and deciding that my back-up plan (Summer College at Cornell) was not the best choice, I’ve decided to get a job to pay for flying lessons. I’m either working at a toy store or doing a paid internship planting trees with a nonprofit. But my main goal is to learn to fly. :)

Two questions: How will this look on apps, and do people think the toy store or the trees is better?

Go with the tress. Internships(especially paid ones) sound better than regular jobs and should you choose to write an essay about the experience you could spin it and talk about being environmentally friendly.
