Alum Rec?

My AP Chem and Regents Chem teacher is a UofC alum. I know he could write me a good rec, but I'm afriad he might not know me too well on a personal level.

Another (math) teacher might know me better... I was an active member in the club she supervises, and was in her Math B and AP Stats class. However, I don't know if her command of English, and her willingness to go the extra yeard to make me look good is as good as my Chem teacher's.

Who would be better? I don't think my Chem teacher is strongly connected to UChi anymore, so would it make a big diff?

If I decide to apply EA with the math teacher's rec and get deferred, could I send in my Chem teacher's later on? That would make a grand total of 4 teacher recs, which may be pushing it.

If your chem teacher would "go the extra yard to make you look good" and the math teacher wouldn't, then it doesn't really matter whether or not the math teacher knows you better since she won't necessarily communicate it. I'd suggest going with the teacher who wants to write the recommendation and wants to make you look good on paper.

If you do choose the chem teacher, ask him (if you feel it's appropriate) to speak about how well you would fit in to the Chicago undergraduate environment. That is how a rec from an alum would make a difference; he would be able to say whether or not you would be a good addition to campus in a way that other teachers may not be able to.
