Does having an alumni in the family make a difference in the admittance of myself into UVA? My brother graduated from UVA last year as an Econ major, but I am unsure of this makes much of a difference to my chances of getting into UVA. (I was deferred early decision, waiting for regular, if that makes any difference). Also, if my class rank goes up after midyear grade reports are due, is it worth sending the school another transcript? (if only to show more interest)

blackflag, I think your your parents or grandparents must have gone to UVA for you to have legacy status. Furthermore, legacy status only benefits out-of-state applicants. UVA cannot lower the bar any lower than it already does for instate applicants.

Legacy status does matter at UVA. Grandparents, parents, and older siblings all provide legacy status. It does not make a huge difference, especially for in-state applications, but obviously they would not ask for it on the application if they did not take it into consideration.
