Alumni Distinguished Scholorship Competition

Did anyone do the competition in the past? Is there a price to attend? Also, what types of questions are they? Should I start watching Jeoprody? I really want to get at least a tuition scholarship. That would be awesome.

There is no cost to attend, but you do have to pay for a hotel room for the overnight stay. You can't study for the exam, it's a collection of everything a high school student might have come across. There are a vast range of topics, from biology to ancient architecture. The only advice I can give you is get enough sleep so you can make it through the whole test without giving up (there were 2 essay questions at the end when I took it).

Have you or anyone received an invitation to attend the competition yet? S has not received anything yet, and I was wondering when to expect it. Thanks.

Yes, I was invited to the competition as well as the Honors College. I got it at the beginning of last week.

The exam is ridiculously hard, and it can't be studied for. Like a previous commenter said, it's a collection of anything you might have EVER run across during your high school career.

also, don't go into it expecting to get anything. There's 1500+ students taking the exam, and they give out VERY few awards.

MMM! When is the competition? Should we call to inquire if son will be invited? If the letters went out last week, he wasn't included, and he was asked to be in the honors program AND the professorial assistantship program.

Bearsbeets, there is a cost to attend (I believe last year it was $65, including the test, food and lodging for one night).

I did take the test last year; impossibly hard (combine every single AP test in existence and the curriculum still wouldn't cover all the test questions). Of the 1100 students who took the exam last year, ~120 got some sort of monetary award, ranging from thousand dollar scholarships to full rides.

d101parent, as far as letters go they seem to come out in waves. So it might be towards the end of November/beginning of December that your son will be invited by letter (which is almost a guarantee, as he is in both honors/professorial assistantship). The competition is in the first two weekends of February, I believe

Do you have to be invited to do this?

^^Yep. You get a letter in the mail, and most likely emails as well

It mentions the competition in the honors college invitation.
You said there is a cost for lodging an what not, but what about the test itself? That is all I would pay for.

Son still hasn't received an invitation to this. We checked the honors college invitation, and there was no mention of this competition. Has anyone else gotten an invitation?

OK, just talked to the admissions office at MSU. The letters started going out Dec. 1, and are continually being sent throughout the month. The competition will be the 1st 2 weekends of February, and the letter will state the weekend you are assigned to attend.

I just got my letter yesterday! It costs 65 dollars to take the test and another 60 if you want to stay in the kellogg center on friday night.
