MSU Scholarship Competition

Anyone have any information on the MSU Alumni Distinguished Scholarship competition? Can't decide whether or not to attend. It will cost a lot for plane ticket and lodging, not sure if it's worth the expense, because I think they only award 15 scholarships.... chances are slim.

they award 15-20 full ride scholarships but actually end up awarding around 50-80 other scholarships (partial tuition etc). I live out of state and came to ADS - they also notified me about a $200 travel voucher. For me, even though I didn’t receive any scholarships it was so worth going…I had never visited Michigan state/the state of MIchigan before so my visit made a big difference in determining where I wanted to go (ultimately MSU) because I had a ton of fun seeing campus & meeting a lot of awesome students.

Do you have to be a permanent resident/citizen to be eligible for this scholarship?

I don’t know the residency requirements, but my son received his notification/invitation a few weeks ago. If an invitation hasn’t been received by a student at this date, I don’t think it will be. My son is attending, but we live just over an hour away from MSU, so it’s pretty convenient. If we had to fly and/or travel a great distance, the decision would not have been as easy, given the odds of actually receiving a significant scholarship. Hoping to beat the odds! :)

This sucks. I’m going to give them a call tomorrow. I’d think that my stats would be good enough to get an invite.

Well, it’s a bit late for your question, but no - internationals were invited, and did come.

The test really isn’t bad. Don’t let them scare you. If anyone comes next weekend, I’ll be volunteering at the banquet, and for the math department, so I might see you!

We’ll be there the 11th and 12th… I have a question about parking. For those of us that are somewhat “local”, will there be designated parking? I’ve been to the campus numerous times, usually for basketball and football games, but I don’t know much about regular “visitor” parking. Maybe the lot across Harrison from the Breslin? Or, is there sufficient parking at the Kellogg Center?

^^ There is enough parking at Kellogg Conference Center. The organizers did a great job of presenting a well balanced view of MSU & myriad opportunities (study abroad, Honors College, Professorial Assistanceship, Departmental info, dormitory living, financial aid etc.).

Thanks, Trinity, looking forward to it! And now the BIG question: How bad was The Test?

I guess the test was quite challenging. Based on comments overheard from kids coming out of the exam hall, the test reportedly covered many subjects, about of which they had no clue! So, all in all, the test leveled the field for students with various academic backgrounds.

To me the test was extremely challenging (I took it in feb '08). It’s the equivalent of putting together every single AP test (non-foreign language) together and choosing a random selection of questions from them. There were questions on art history, government, economics, psychology, english, calculus, biology, chemistry, etc. There was even a selection of questions I think from a practice MCAT. I probably guessed on 75% of the questions, lol.

Do they only have one competition? I want to attend but I did not get anything because I applied a little later after the Nov 1 date.

Yes, you have totally missed out on the ADS competition if you sent in your application late.

Oh man :frowning: thanks though

Ds competed today. Boy, what a lot of dazed faces walking out of the exam room! Those kids looked like they had been put through the wringer, that’s for sure.

The ADS phone interviews are being scheduled this Week. Good luck!

What is the difference between the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship and the University Distinguished Scholarship?

Here is a link that dates back to early 2002:

honorscollege.msu.edu/_documents/HCon02p8-11.pdf

"The Alumni Distinguished Scholarships, first offered in 1956, now go to individuals selected from the set of high-achieving high school seniors who have applied to Michigan State and who come to campus in February to take an intensive general knowledge examination. A committee comprised of faculty and administrators selects recipients based on results of the ADS examination, high school programs and achievement, other standardized test scores, and interviews of the finalists. For many years, the University’s goal was to award ten Alumni Distinguished Scholars annually; that number was increased to twelve in 1999 and fifteen in 2002.

The University Distinguished Scholarships, initiated in 2000, were modeled after the ADS awards, but targeted toward students for whom attendance at the ADS weekend might be difficult because of distance or cost, as well as students whose exceptional academic records may require an early competitive scholarship response from MSU. University Distinguished Scholars are selected by a committee comprised of the Provost, the Director of Admissions, and the Director of the Honors College. The University’s current goal is to award five University Distinguished Scholarships annually."

ADS competition letters notifying the winners are out! good luck! tytyty
