alumni interviews

I was emailed asking if i wanted to arrange an Alumni interview.
Who gets these emails?

Stanford is in the process of making interviews a permanent addition to the application process. However, for now, Stanford only offers interviews to applying students within certain states. As far as I know, though, every person within your state who is applying to Stanford got that e-mail.

What is the purpose of these interviews? Is Stanford evaluating the students or is Stanford trying to promote the university?

To be honest, I’m not sure. I believe that, in the future, it will be used as an evaluative measure. However, I believe they are phasing them in, and for now (at least it was this way for the Class of 2016) interviews are not considered as a part of the admission decision. For now it’s just a way for students to have questions answered about Stanford, I believe.

Just a disclaimer, but I could be wrong. xD

I had an interview, so maybe I can speak to this. My alum said he fills out a form about the interview and sends it back to the admissions office. Plus, the interview was mostly about my activities, and only a little bit about my questions, so it definitely felt evaluative. It seems like, for the people that are being interviewed, they’re just using it to understand the applicants a little bit better.
