my grandfather received a lette, saying Yale was glad that I had applied and that my grandfather recommended the school to me, but it also said that yale is very competitive.

Should I worry about this?
Could this be something they give to all the alumni whose grandchildren and children don't get accepted???

My mom got the letter to, so its nothing to worry about. All alumni with children/grandchildren applying get it, and it has nothing to do with whether or not that student will get accepted.

Alums with kids/grandkids who are applying are and have been getting this letter. It basically says for the applicants to not be complacent and that nothing is guaranteed given the extremely competitive nature of current admissions. It's not a positive or negative indication for the applicants' chances.

It's Alumni Affairs' damage control -- just in case the legacy is rejected.
