Alumni Scholarship Question

Are Alumni Scholarships sent to applicants randomly or are there certain criteria that they look for?

Also, out of curiosity, how many people received an invitation for the Alumni Scholarship and were accepted to Cal? And how many people (if any) received an invitation but weren't offered admission?

what do you mean by randomly? do you mean the scholarship itself? anyone can apply for the scholarship...plus, the scholarship deadline has passed.

I got an invitation to apply (yes, I realize anyone can apply. I think he's asking if anyone contacted you, however), and got in.

Sorry, I meant the invitation to apply for the alumni scholarship.

jeez, it's amazing how much I have forgotten in a year. I went through some of my old e-mails and yes, I received an invitation on January 5, 2005. I then got a reminder on 1/20, 2/1, and a final reminder on 2/10. I was a Regents' Admit, which I believe quirkily is as well.

So the answer to your question was that I did receive the e-mail + was admitted. The connection is shaky though... = /

I was told that the invitation to apply to Alumni is given universally. Not by a source up high, but by several people in person, and I seem to recall reading it online.

hmm it'd be interesting to see how many people got the invite but weren't admitted. Although I understand anyone may apply, several of my friends were not given the invite via e-mail. I too received the invite and several follow-ups. In a perfect world the invite would equal admission. Oh well, guess we'll just have to wait till the 30th...

From the Alumni Scholarship FAQ
http://alumni.berkeley.edu/Students/Scholarships_and_Awards/AS_FAQs.asp

If you scan the entire FAQ it becomes clear that being invited to apply has no correlation to being admitted.

So I'm supposed to apply without already knowing whether I have been accepted to Cal?

Yes. Although this may seem inconvenient, the reason that we set the application deadline before admissions decisions come out is so that we can let you know the results of your application before your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) is due. You will be informed of the final scholarship decisions no later than April 25.

Oh, so it's not a giant conspiracy to lead us to believe we've been admitted? Lol. Too bad.

when do we hear about alumni scholarship status?

b/c i haven't gotten any call yet :( does that mean that my scholarship application wasn't approved by the almighty committee?

I think I read somewhere that semifinalists are notified during the first week of April and will be interviewed some time afterward. I'm not completely sure, though.

When will I know whether or not I have received the Alumni Scholarship?

You will absolutely know by April 25. We set this date so that you know the results of your scholarship application before the May SIR deadline. We feel it is important to know whether you will be receiving this financial help before you make your college decision.

I knew 2 days after my interview, notified by e-mail.

geminihop: First question: did you get the alumni scholarship? If so, since you're a Regents Scholar (yes?), what happened with the two scholarships? Higher budget, taken off EFC, or what?

Yes, I received the Alumni Scholarship and I'm a Regents' Scholar. I have another friend who had the same luck, but I'm not really sure about how his finAid worked out.

Basically, my EFC made me ineligible for any need-based aid. Thus, I received the basic award for both of the scholarships, but no need-based awards.

What ended up happening was that these two scholarships, combined with my outside ones, took away from my loans. I ended up having too much in loans, so a lot of the money was refunded to me.

There is one more scholarship that Berkeley gives out called the Cal Bears Scholarship. I'm not really familiar with that one, but it is supposed to be based on merit and need.
