okay this is basically what happened during my interview: i first introduced myself to the panel. it was about 6 people at a round table with me at the center so it was kinda ehh. they basically just told me to tell them about my leadership opportunities, so i go into talking about interact club, model un, etc. and from there they branched off questions like "oh i see you got first in ecology for sci olympiad" or "i see you worked at ihop". apparently i failed to mention those when i was talking about the other things. the initial question was just so general so it could've gone anywhere -- i just went w/ the ECs that i felt were the strongest.

as for the additional materials, they told me it wasn't necessary but ENCOURAGED. so of course, why wouldn't i bring anything? i came in w/ placards and resolutions from various mun conferences, a print out of the website i designed for interact, and also brought along my camera w/ pictures from my interact club projects for them to pass around. i introduced them as things they might want to look at as visual components for what i did, rather than just base everything off the interview. at the end, i offered them my materials, and the main interviewer requested to keep them so that they would have things to look at at the end of they day when they were to evaluate.

overall, i didn't run into that many traps (although there were one or two i remember possibly having...not that significant anyway). however, i still had to be on my toes cause they did not pause b/w question and answer. the committee was pretty friendly as well (w/ the exception of this one guy who did not seem interested AT ALL -- the rest were pretty nice).

anyway, if anyone is having their interview come up, i would call and ask to see if you could bring in supplemental materials. when i called, kara (main interviewer) said teacher recs were okay along w/ other supplemental materials.

i would have to respond by saying that every interview panel is different. by the way you described the panel, it certainly is quite different from mine since i only had to deal with 3 people which to my surprise were culturally diverse unlike the leadership commitee composed of mainly white people. also, you seem to have done a pretty thorough overview of the ecs and etc. i seem to have pretty high standards for all i do and looking at my performance in the leadership interview, i felt like i totally messed up on the latter. btw, i had both the same day--leadership first, then achievement.

now, ur panel was quite linient towards supporting evidence. in mine, i saw NO ONE bringing a portfolio with them. and like i said we were DISCOURAGED from doing so. i guess itsup to them to decide whether they allow it or not, but thats besides the point.

however, questioning in my jurisdiction's panel was the main vehicle for getting to know who you really are and if you really did what you say you did. of course, if you skip something that you wrote it is obvious they will address this discrepancy in the interview process--for clarification purposes.

the fact that your interview lasted what you consider a shor time might have been because they decided that your evidence was obviously overwhelming for the time allocation for your interview. this in no way represents something bad. it gives them a lasting image of your achievements.

i had to struggle with an african american male who seemed the root of indifference and scrutinity. i had to win him based on the minute hints he gave about himself. as i deduced correctly--THANK GOD FOR MY INTUITION--he and i shared more in common than i originally thought. he is and accountant and went through the exact same carrer that i intend to follow, so at the closing of the interview where you get to ask questions, i used a trump card that i usually reserve for EXTREME cases--not recommended if you have no prior backgound info--in which i asked about a brochure of the company i was reading in the lobby. he immediately opened up and started talking about it. it happens to be that he WORKS for the darn company! (Lucky me i would say). oce out of the room i addressed him individually and asked him of his major, followed by MY personal career goal--highly similar but of course with slight variation--then he gave me his card and said that i could contact him anytime for advice. i won him there.

so there you have it. in case of emergency ALWAYS have a hook for a dificult interviewer, especially if you share some interest. thats what i did for the leadership interview as well, although that was just to make things really fun. as always handle with care or it might backfire.

i'll be honest. as far as i know the LA interviews were this past saturday. now, does this mean that you didnt get the chance for an interview, i dont think so. i called a friend i met at the YEAH program at Cal, he lives in LA and was interviewed for the scholarship. he gave me this info:

****well, it reads in the email that the info in it is confidential so no posting, sorry.

but tell me if you got this too

email by someone by the name of Peter Chang
place: Manhattan Beach (sorry cant be too specific)
date: saturday April 14 from 10 am to 3 pm

if not, what exactly did you get in your email???

and as i said before, CONTACT THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION IMMEDIATELY if you were informed that there was a REQUIRED interview as stated in the email. they can probably help you out.

Not all interviews were last week - mine is today (this is for Leadership - I'm not sure what yours was for). On the other hand, though, I was notified two weeks ago, so calling would probably be a good idea.

Slightly more on topic: I wasn't nervous before reading this thread (I'm generally good at interviews), but now I am. Any tips? Would it be okay to bring along copies of my school's paper if that's my primary leadership activity?

I applied for the leadership one as a transfer student but I haven't heard anything yet. Of course decisions don't come out until the 30th, so maybe they won't say anything until then.

Finish with mah interview....
Nothing special except I was interviewed by only 2 professors from JPL.
Heh.... they gave me an informal interview, which is something I dont really like - since I usually laugh too much in those interview
sigh I dont think I did that well but That was fun...

results are out on the 27th for freshmen and in late may for transfers

btw, this is a thread for the achievement award. the fact i mentioned the leadership interview is to show the contrast--and for people NOT to feel pity for me LOL jk. oh, and if urs is today then i wish you good luck. it must be at night, then.

InvertedCommas:

i would tell u to prepare for it as well as you can. just visualize yourself being asked the typical qs and you answering them eloquently, truthfully, and ALWAYS sticking to the topic.

always keep in mind what you wrote on your appllication and try to address it during the interview. in terms of supplementals, it can't hurt unless explicitly mentioned but go ahead and take some with you,, whatever they are, as long as your name is in the editor's or a high rankinfg position--just to strenghten your case.

btw, there's nothing wrong with a little humor but too much of everything is bad, as well. it will help you make the whole experience less stressful and hopefully you wont come out with a big headache like i did XP

This, btw, was the email that told me I qualified for the finalist round. After this I only received one email regarding the chatroom they were going to host and that is all I have heard from them since.

I'm a finalist for the Leadership award too and I emailed them about not hearing anything about the email and they told me the same thing... if you don't get an interview you're out of the running for the scholarship. It's not looking great at this point.

FOR ALL LEADERSHIP AWARD PROGRAM CANDIDATES WHO DIDNT GET AN INTERVIEW:

yes, if you didnt get an interview you're out of the race for the money, sorry.

if you live in the LA area and received the email of finalist status but DIDNT get any more info on scheduling an interview, you are out of luck. interviews in LA were on saturday 14, today, monday 16, and tomorrow, tuesday 17. you can clearly figure the rest.

dont feel too bad though. you made it this far. and like the Gates Millenium Scholarship told me in the rejection letter: "This in no way undermines your achievements."

Don't give up hope yet! I just got a call from my interviewer a half hour ago and we just did the interview over the phone. He asked if there was another time to meet, but I'm going to Cal tomorrow to visit (so excited!) and not getting back until Sunday, so there wasn't and we just did it over the phone. It does seem odd that I had a 30 min phone interview instead of an hour panel in person interview, but I'm just happy that I'm still in the running.

if i remember correctly from last year, they sent me an email of notification about a week after my interview. given, all the students were interviewed at different times, so i think the only important information i can contribute is that notification was given through email.

Is it just me, or does this scholarship seem to be kind of unorganized? So many random types of interviews, and the lack of phone calls and a mere two emails to notify one of one's status...

My interview will be on Cal day.....which is kind of late in my book seeing as the award recipients will be notified late this month.
