Alumni Scholarship

got an email saying i didnt get the leadership award.. which is expected b/c my interview didnt go well at all. but w/e b/c regents covers everything for me :)

now, i kinda lost the trend of the thread since its for Alumni but it seems to have deviated towards Leadership. Try stating ur program scholarship please, so that i can follow. Now, I also got waitlisted for Leadership, and yes, no word on Achievement yet. We'll know this week though (crossing fingers).

I went to Senior Weekend and...I HATED the campus. It was SOOOOOOO UGLY. Man. I was disappointed by the whole thing. Now, that aside... the people I met there were REALLY COOL. That's what made me choose Cal. And whats the deal with the batallion of homeless bums??? Are they a landmark of Cal or what???

I talked to the Alumni Asstn. and to one of the previous awardees. She said that they had a list of winners BUT the guy who had it left as I was barely being introduced to her!!!! Bummer. Now, and for some of you guys it'll be a shocker, a girl--Indian, I believe-- said that she had ALREADY BEEN NOTIFIED of being a recepient for the ACHIEVEMENT AWARD!!!!!!!!!! >.<

Yes, I was there. Yes, I was jealous. And, of course, I was p1ssed!!!!!!!!
This clearly shows that they are clearly highly unorganized since some of you are still getting interviews while most of us already got them and a few already know they won it. I guess each district is semi-autonomous. So... no more assumptions from my part beyond telling you to wait for info to be sent to you.

i guess noone still knows a definite date when we'll find out

I was in the Alumni Scholarship chat. They said that recipients would be notified on April 24th. Don't know if they're still sticking to that day, but that's what they said.

batallion of homeless bums? dood, it's an urban campus, get used to it, they're people too, they have a right to hang around berkeley. they don't cause many problems, and most of the homeless people are really chill. Actually, there was a big concert @ people's park today, that as awesome.
and yes...the alumni association people, especially the scholarship folks, are pretty disorganized at times, but it is what it is, they have to deal with thousands of apps, welcome to berkeley.

punkwhateverthehelltherestmeans:

i live in LA, the "capital of bums", furthermore, i live in a city plagued by them and, to my surprise, i saw more --to be politically correct-- "homeless people/indigents" at Cal than I have seen at my city--that in itself is a big thing for me. Now, the whole BS about "oh, --and if I am allowed to take your style-- "dood", it's an urban campus, get used to it...blah, blah, blah" DOESN NOT in ANY way reflect urban campuses. For example, and to refute your case, try going to CSU Dominguez Hills, maybe Long Beach, or even a Community College, ANY damn CC and count the homeless people nearby, Christ even my closest CC which I attended for the last couple of years while in HS, and the numbers DO NOT add up to Berkeleys. I asked current students and they were ashamed of it. There were around 100+ students in my Senior Weekend Program and I talked to at least 20 of them. Guess what??? They were all concerned about it. Some even decided NOT to attend Cal because of the campus' ugliness and...YUP, the "homeless/indigent people" at Cal.

Then again, any highly urban campus does have its share of bums BUT Cal is plagued by them. By now u probably think I am intollerant at them. The answer is no. Its just that I feel like Cal with all its BS about "leadership" and who knows what, in community involvement and service does little to solve this big problem located right at its door step. The students are more concerned abouut their pet projects and neglect the obviously and unfortunatly deplorable conditions of these people. The banner of social incomformity and revolutionary approach to the welfare of the less fortunate is no longer there??? I saw it. Students are more concerned about getting that ranking position at a student organization which will look SOOOOOOO GOOD in their resume that they neglect to find new ways of improving society. Count how many clubs do community service at schools. I went all over the place during Cal Day and true they are truly concerned for younger students but the fact remains that they no longer do OTHER activities beyond tutoring kids in Oakland. Where's the individuality???

Oh, and for the rest of the posters in this thread,I apologize. I'm really into debating and I have a pretty strong argument here. Sorry. :S

Back to the original post, phew....I will be informed on the 27th.

Hey Guys!
I just got back from my overnight visit...
I loved berkeley!!!
Twas an AMAZING place
(i've been there twice. My first visit during the summer was not at all impressive. But this second visit was just awesome, and I've decided 100% to go to berkeley)
ANYWAYS, Getting back on the scholarship issue...I got wait listed
They said it was a "very short wait list"
Let's just hope so :)
Good luck to everyone

wow people are getting waitlisted already?? i still have yet to hear from my interviewer =T

i think people are saying the Leadership award will be announced on the 27th??? That's cutting it close to the deadline...

btw, since i missed cal day, does anybody know any way to go up to cal and fully experience it with some kind of program similar to cal day, or a combination of tours and living in a particular area there to get a feel for the cal experience? im trying to decide whether i should go up and visit this weekend but dont really want to just do the campus tour and then drive all the way back home =T

if you can wait and already decided to attend Cal I would recomend CalSO. Plus, you'll be able to visit and still enroll in classes. If not, then I don't know what to suggest because the Senior Weekend and Overnight Host Program already took place.

BTW, the tour is very educational and eye-opening so if you can't wait, then just go ahead and get the tour the first half of the day and then, after lunch at one of the nice cafes nearby, of course, go ahead and give yourself a tour around campus. I did it with some friends and it was really cool to roam around campus without the herds of people and the nuisance of a guide.

I think they have one more session of Overnight program...
Take advantage of that!

i just had my interview yesterday, and i was interviewed by 3 groups of people (a total of 8) , and it took me 3 hours (including waiting)

i never expected the interview to be so long, but overall it went well. One of the interviewers told me that they will send out the offical results in the first week of May. Be patient guys!

First week of May?! All these different dates are so weird. I just had another brief phone interview (my second, but with a different person) and he said I would hear within the next few days.

Well I just heard back and I got it! There is still hope for people who haven't heard yet. Good luck!

wow, cool. how did you get notified??? through email, letter, or by phone????
i'm really happy for you. today, i got notified that i am the recipient to a HUUUUUUGE scholarship at my school which pretty much rivals TAAP--although, it doesn't come with a LAPTOP included X.X. anyway, i understand your excitement. i was lured into the counselors office with my principal saying that there was a problem with my senior project (a requirement to graduate), but i am no fool. i knew it had to do with something big or else my english teacher would've contacted me.

btw, GOOD LUCK to all of you who are still waiting. i know its frustrating. i'm still waiting for my response, as well. but now, its not as much of a life or death situation.

Email this evening (although I guess afternoon in CA). And congrats to you on your scholarship, that's so great!

I got the Leadership scholarship! I was notified yesterday through email.

Good luck to everyone who's still waiting!

alright, this is what happened. at 5:37 pm today, cali time, i got this message:

Dear Achievement Award Applicant,

You should be very proud of advancing to the Finalist round of The Achievement Award Program. A panel of alumni staff and volunteers carefully considered your application, but selections for the scholarship were particularly rigorous this year, with a 50% increase in application numbers. Regrettably, we are not able to offer you an Achievement Award for 2007-08....

blah, blah , blah. you know how it gets. so i was kind of dissapointed, you know but since i got another scholarship i don't really mind that much anymore.

So life continues...and a minute later i receive another email titled:

Error: Achievement Award Notification

Dear Achievement Award Applicant,

You received the previous email in error. We are still finalizing award considerations and you will hear from us with a final answer by the end of the week. Thank you for your patience.

LMAO.................still LMAO...........i calm down and think to myself "Gee, come on. Just tell me that I'm not getting that darn scholarship--and the laptop, of course--ALREADY!!!! I can take it.!!!

I mean, two more days of wondering could give me a brain seizure or instill a chronic anxiety disorder, jk. LOL XoX ....still LMAO

alright, did anyone get this message?? or is it just me???

Dear Leadership Award Applicant,
I am very pleased to inform you that you have been selected as an awardee for the California Alumni Association Leadership Award for the 2007-08 academic year...

Just got the e-mail an hour ago. :)

This is what we (waitlistess) got:

Dear Leadership Award Applicant,
I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected as an alternate awardee for the California Alumni Association Leadership Scholarship for the 2007-08 academic year. This means you are on a very short waiting list for an award. If you respond to this letter by May 1 and inform us that you wish to stay on the wait list, you will be notified by May 7 if funds became available for you.

Hmm...let's just hope it's short
I'm still happy :)

Good luck to everyone!

keep in mind though that just in this thread there are many waitlistees already. so the whole BS comment on how we are "on a very short waiting list for an award" crap is hard to believe at this point. btw, remember that you HAVE to REAPPLY for the scholarship EVERY year!!

anyways, good luck to all of us waitlistees!!!

Also remember, though, that those awarded the scholasrship have not yet chosen their school to attend. If the awards are awarded by region and one in each region opts for a different uni, there could be many waitlistees receiving $. In other words, they offer the award before a student has chosen to attend, if that student does not attend, they give the money to the next in line who will be attending Cal.
