Scholarship Opportunity for UC Berkeley Applicants

Did anyone else get an e-mail with this as the title?? I'm an out of state applicant, and I'm wondering if it's a good sign that I got this... Thanks a lot!

I got one too. I would like more info as well. Thanks!

i got this too..i doubt it's anything big since the site it links you too is open to everyone? lol plus on the bottom theres a huge disclaimer that it doesn't mean you're going to get in..nor that you're getting any money...it doesn't have any significance?

kind of a bummer... >.<

i got that, too--along with the disclaimer that is as long as the notice haha.

I strongly recommend applying for the Cal Alumni Scholarsip whether you got the email or not. Just go to the website and complete the application and essay's by the deadline. By submitting the application you have an opportunity of a $2500 menit scholarship for your 1st year (it's renewable each year.) And, you don't need to be in state to qualify. There's also another need based scholarship worth up to $7500, also renewable each year.
Just by applying for the Alumni Scholarship you will have an opportunity to apply for one of 400 (or so) places in their overnight stay program during Cal Day weekend in late April. If you don't apply for the scholarship you cannot apply to attend the overnight stay.
I met a lot of my friends at Cal during Overnight Stay and we still stay in touch. Definitely worth it. So is the $2500!

Applying though does not guarantee admission though... that's what the disclaimer says if I recall... :)

I got it too! Did everyone get it?

From what I read in the e-mail, it's only for out of state applicants.

no im instate and a few of my buddies got it too. anyone wanting to get financial aid receives taht email, unfortunately it means nothing about our admissions. for those who got that one email asking for extra info is the one you should be wanting.

I got that email asking for extra info. Why is that good? I heard that it was only for borderline students. What exactly does it mean ?

I got the scholarship email... but no "extra info" email. I'm from Illinois.

At the very least, the "extra info" email is going to help your chances. I think it says something in there about it being an exclusively positive way for the admissions people to get some more information about this or that (Senior grades, activities, etc.).

There is a thread about it: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=288591%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=288591</a></p>

If anyone is in Mechanical Engineering, definitely look up the Drake Scholarship.

They just restarted it this year.

The Alumni email should go to every one, the scholarship is open to every one and you should apply. You will be interviewed (if you are chosen as a semi-finalist) sometime in April, and awards are announced at the end of April. You reapply every year for it and the scholarship does not reduce any other grants in your aid package and it is not based on need, so any one, in state or OOS can qualify. This is one essay worth writing! Not like the fast web stuff that is a waste of time.

hi somemom,

Does this email really go to every one? If you don't get the email, can you still apply? At least to date, S2 has not received this emal from Berkeley.

Also, if you do get the scholarship is there any requirement for having filed FAFSA?

What is the link provided in the email?

thanks

I don't have the link, D is a sophmore, but the Alumni is open to every one, so definitely apply for it. Mainly it is based on leadership. I don't know if it goes to every one, but I think it is supposed to. The people in that office are extremely nice, friendly, helpful, willing to work around scheduling conflicts, etc.

Okay, I searched the website and found the link:

<a href="http://www.alumni.berkeley.edu/Students/Scholarships_and_Awards/main.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.alumni.berkeley.edu/Students/Scholarships_and_Awards/main.asp</a></p>

avoidingwork...

The scholarship is described as a non-academic merit based scholarship, so it doesn't have anything to do with FAFSA.
